Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Easy to find on corner of Pleasant & Center Street up the hill from the main shopping drag.
Nice sculptured with tons of history etched in stone base and big chunks of stone or granite around.
Nice history lesson especially if you're a fan

We saw this statue display while on the walk to the Victorian Mansion. It was a neat find and very interesting to read all the information on John Ford and his films. A nice short stop on a long walk.

The statue was on our way to our hotel from the port so I made it a point to stop by. Kinda cool to see his statue and learn about this guy and the movies he made.

The ten-foot high bronze statue of John Ford, a Portland native who is regarded by many critics and film historians to be the greatest movie director in the history of American cinema. The piece was sculpted by artist George Kelly in his New York studio and dedicated in July 1998. Ford looks across Center Street where a pub owned by his father once stood. Ringing the statue are six four-foot high granite blocks, each inscribed with the titles and descriptions of Ford’s six Oscar winning films. Facts from Ford’s life are inscribed in granite at the base of the statue.

We had a brief look at this statue on our way to Victoria Mansion from the cruise port. A history lesson to be had.

This engagingly realistic 10-foot (3.05 m) tall bronze statue featured a pipe-smoking Ford seated in a director’s chair, as if he were directing one of the 130 films he directed in his career. The chair rests on a rock base. Six four-foot (1.2 m) tall granite blocks ring the statue commemorating Ford’s six Oscar-winning films. Dedicated in 1998, in the city’s Arts District, this statue erected in honor of a Portland native overlooked the intersection of Fore Street, York Street, Pleasant Street, and Center Street. Access was by brick-paved sidewalks. Metered curbside parking was nearby. I appreciated most of what I found here; I disliked only the cluttered urban setting.

This bronze sculpture of John Ford is my favorite Portland statue. He's portrayed in middle age, smoking his pipe and sitting in a director's chair that's set on a rock base indicative of the rock formations of Monument Valley, where several of his movies were filmed. Six blocks surrounding the base have the names and descriptions of his six Oscar-winning films. The statue's ten feet tall and very impressive. Not many people realize that Ford was born on Cape Elizabeth and raised in Portland.

Situated on a crossroads on the west side of town, this is quite the unexpected statue to find. It is a good one. Who knew that his nickname was Bull Feaney so don't forget to also seek out the great pub in town with his name.

Just inland of downtown, on Pleasant street, you will find this statue of John Ford who lived in Portland and went on to become an acclaimed film director. You may recognize some of the film titles mentioned as part of this memorial - How Green is my Valley and The Grapes of Wrath. As part of the statue, Ford sits on a rock formation depicting Monument Valley in Utah and Arizona where many of his westerns were shot. Ford himself overlooks Center street where his father owned a pub.
