Take a car ferry or just a cruise. The Casco Bay Islands are beautiful and historic. We suggest the mail boat cruise. Cruise while the boat delivers mail and freight to the islands' residents.

Very informative and relaxing cruise around the islands. We did the mailroom run which lasted from about 3-6, and enjoyed the descriptions and narration by the crew. BYOB.

Took ferry ride to Peak Island (multiple times of day). Gives nice view harbor, Portland itself, and other islands. Can get quite full to get there a little early or just take the next one.

Very much enjoyed our ferry ride out to Peaks Island, but we wish there was more to do at Peaks Island while there, since it's now approaching "winter" season there in October. Most things are closed and not too much happening, though golf carts or bikes could be rented. Seems it would be an amazing summer getaway.

We lucked out with the weather! Had a great time on the Casco Mail Run! They literally deliver mail and goods on this cruise! Go to The Standard Bakery first and grab snacks. It's a three-hour tour. Great narration about the islands in the Casco Bay. Definitely recommend.

Easy to grab a ticket to go to another Island and you climb aboard with plenty of heated space. Beautiful view of the bay area. They run a tight schedule, so be there on the hour. You can also ferry your car too.

A special feature of Portland, Maine is the islands of Casco Bay. Walk down to Commercial Street and board a ferry for a memorable time. Several tours can drop you off at one of the islands for the day, or you can hop from one to another as the mail boat makes its deliveries for the day. Guests in my... More

The mail boat is a delightful way to see some of the islands and wonderful scenery around Portland. It's cheap ($16) and runs all year. We went on a sunny day in autumn and although we felt cold we had a great time. We brought some food from the Flatbread Company and some local beer and enjoyed that as we... More

We hopped on to the ferry to see how the mail run operated. Very interesting to see all of the islands out in Casco Bay. You can BYOB and bring food on board to enjoy as you are out on the water. A very different way of life to see, a fun way to enjoy the sunset.
