Now, if you are a true mountain climber, this isn't the mountain for you. But if you are looking for a good, solid day's outing, with decent amount of exercise and lovely views, Sugarloaf fits the bill. I've hiked it a couple of times over the years and it's just a very nice way to spend a day outside.

We went to take a short hike to the summit. Unfortunately, we found the trailheads poorly marked and could not locate the trail from the parking area in the limited time we had. We wound up walking along a different trail, which had some enjoyable scenic overlooks, but no access to the summit. Walking back through the entire parking area,... More

Sugarloaf Mountain is the perfect trail for scenic walking or more strenuous exercise. It's very easy to find and the major highway is only about 3 miles for the mountain entrance. The trials are thoroughly marked with blue or orange blazes with the blue being the easiest in my opinion. Parking does fill up fast, so going early is a... More

We live in DC and occasionally take the 45 minute drive up here for a good hike on a sunny day. The terrain is mixed, with some strenuous ascents, but nothing too treacherous. Fun and spectacular views on a clear day.

Just like everyone said it was super crowded and most of the parking was full at 10 am on a nice Saturday. The mountain is still amazing and so much fun for the kids. We will come back earlier next time!

I'd recommend going in the fall for the vistas of foliage. There's a great little coner pumpkin grower on the road across from The Comus Inn there. They have dozens of different kinds of pumpkins. Make it a fall trip and go hiking on the mountain once you've purchased your pumpkins, or stop by the Comus Inn for brunch of... More

Sugarloaf Mountain is a short distance from Washington D.C. and it offers hikes and walks for everyone. The trails are marked well and while not very challenging, you can certainly customize them and get in a good workout with 9-10 mile hike throughout the mountain. Just be sure to get there early – there is limited parking with both the... More

We decided to take two preteens hiking on a shorter hike and chose Sugarloaf. Very easy to get to off I-270 and signage was very good. Parking at the bottom seems to be very limited, so if you want to do a base to summit hike, you should get there early. By noon on a Sunday it was packed. Ample... More

I had a great experience climbing the Blue Trail. But my friend and I got separated and he got lost. Don't hike alone unless you are a good navigator or have hiked the trail before. Keep watching for the blue markers on the trees (orange, yellow etc. markers for other trails). The nearby Comus Inn in a 150 year-old house... More
