Lynn and I recently drove by the Cape Cod Canal Railway Bridge while on the way to visit one of the nearby lighthouses. The Bridge is unusual as it looms way up there waiting to return in its lower position for the next train. That...More

A real live erector set!. If you hit it at the right time you can watch it lower or raise to facilitate train or boat traffic, usually in the raised position for boat traffic.

The vacation rental we used was about a mile from the bridge. We would be on the deck and as soon as we heard the train whistle we would all come out to the deck to watch the bridge lower so the train could cross...More

Drove up to ostensibly see the canal but was right beside the Railway Bridge... very cool and engineered beautifully....I was even more impressed with the tidal waters and their rate of flow and knowing, depending on tides, if the river flows one way or another...pretty...More

A fascinating piece of engineering. It is pleasant to sit by the canal and watch the boats going up and down but seeing the bridge lowering and the train coming over is really exciting.

easy to get to. On the bank of the Cape Cod Canal. Free parking, rest rooms, fishing and great to watch the bridge come down and see the train cross.

We walk our dogs here when the weather is questionable. It's generally not too busy, and I like to watch the water and boats zip through the canal.

I am from the midwest, and have never seen a structure like this. I is very large and you can see it from the main street in Buzzards Bay. Near the National Marine Life Center

Great question. The lowers a few times a day for train passage - often for the trash train in the morning and evening. Keep your eyes peeled for the Cape Flyer schedule as those are guaranteed times the bridge will lower.
