The epicenter of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant." The events that took place on Thanksgiving 1965 became a song, the song became a record, the record a movie. The movie was filmed in 1968 where the actual events took place on location at The Old Trinity Church, which became The Guthrie Center founded by Arlo Guthrie, and named for his parents, Woody & Marjorie Guthrie in 1991. The Center continues the Guthrie Family philosophy of a place for interfaith worship, cultural exchange especially with music and art, and of course a place to eat (during seasonal performances). 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" and the old church will celebrate in style with services and performances that will put a smile on your face and nourish your heart.

OK, I will admit that the main reason I came here was because I hear “Alice’s restaurant” every thanksgiving on my local rock and roll radio station. I have also heard a few of this other “story songs” which I find very entertaining. But it was a moving experience to come to the actual church where Alice’s Restaurant massacree took... More

Had a wonderful visit with George Laye, the Director of The Guthrie Center. George's passion and devotedness to meeting the needs of his community, whether by obtaining a grant to replace the roof of the center to providing free community lunches and legal clinics, left me with a deeper committment to leave my world a better place. I am so... More

Listened to a blues singer and had dinner. The space is intimate and we enjoyed the concert, though didn't always hear the words he sung. The music came through. The food and service were fine. The venue has a nice feel to it. One of the volunteers gave us a good background tour of the site.

This is a beautifully renovated church, with first-class sound system and a nice menu (even if the volunteers sometimes take a bit of time to deliver the food.) Lucy Kaplansky, a wonderful singer and guitar player, was the night's entertainment and she was wonderful. For a real Berkshire experience, this venue is hard to beat.

Stopped in here as part of our Alice's Restaurant scavenger hunt in the Stockbridge area, and one of the workers graciously showed us around the building, suggested vantage points for photos, and explained what the center is all about. I'm sad that I don't live in the area, because their programs sound amazing. Guthrie fans will enjoy the news clippings,... More

Saw previous post that on Thursday night the had enjoyable sing along with music of the sixties and seventies. None of that happened. Musicians sang their own songs about loss, sadness, death, and loss. Did hear one familiar song out of ten before we left. This is more of an open mike night for singers of varying talent. If that... Go to the Wednesday noon lunch. It's free, and comprises the best local organic donations from nearby farms, expertly prepared by volunteer chefs. High-price attorneys, doctors, engineers and professors mingle with low-budget artists and more than enough street people. It's what you imagined Arlo would sponsor.

I attended the final show of the Alice's Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour. It is a superb music venue, besides being a place of good works and good people.

Had flashbacks to the '60s. Went to the Thursday night hootenanny, expecting a slightly cheesy open mike night. What we got was a journey back to our college days where a group of friends would gather together to play and sing their latest offerings. Ten musicians, about the same amount of "audience". Great surroundings. Two hours of great songs with... More
