This Oak Bluffs beach and surrounding area of colorful gingerbread Victorian houses have strong links to African-American heritage on Martha's Vineyard, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The beach was the setting for a teenage romance movie called "The Inkwell."

We visited Inkwell Beach everyday! On one of the days that we visited Circuit Avenue we were greeted by an older gentleman as the "Inkwell girls". Would love to go back when Howard University has their annual event at Inkwell Beach!

This storied beach is nestled near the center of Oak Bluffs so it's an easy trek for folks staying there. It's pretty rocky as you enter the water , water shoes will help make this easier. There are so many beautiful beaches on the island that this one does not compare in beauty but it has a lot of history... More

So convenient, easy to navigate Extremely convenient and perfect for just lounging at the beach! The Ayer was delightful even after hurricane Hermine!

Beach was average at best, nice that it was walkable and conveniently accessible from hotels and other attractions. Not a lot of sand and very rocky getting into the water. It was for the most part clean, what dampened the atmosphere of the beach was large groups of people who would come and blast their boom boxes, spoiling the relaxing... More

It is rare to walk to the cold ocean and come out feeling warm inside. This was a unique exercise experience that I look forward to again.

This beach is excellent for small children. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Oak Bluffs ferry terminal. The beach is somewhat rocky with shells but the water is very clean and shallow. You can wade out quite a ways and out to a sand bar that has no rocks. Perfect for small children. If you walk down... More

Inkwell has a pretty complex history to it, including its name which was originally intended to be an insult about the African America residents who swam in its waters. Today it's a great example of how diverse Oak Bluffs past was and hopefully what Martha's Vineyard is becoming, with a cornucopia of cultures and ethnic groups taking advantage of its... More
