Bring GPS and a high based Jeep. Don't even think to bring your Porsche, BMW or Mercedes. To get to Alta Rock take the left heading west just across from Russell Way on Milestone. Put on your seatbelts. Head north and look for the Airport ILS glide white structure and follow the road around to the top of Alta Rock.... More

Most day trippers or people staying in town never get a real feel of the island. From alter rock (which is just a hill) you can see a good portion of the island and you notice the huge amount of open conservation land. I'ts easy to get to by car, by bike it's mostly easy but there are some patches... More

The best way to get her is by bike over sandy roads. The journey is just a good as the views once you get to the top. Once here, you get a 360 view of Nantucket. You can't get that anywhere else other than a plane.

We visited Altar Rock while on a bike ride around the island. We rode in the path a little bit until it was tough to navigate on the bike and then we walked. It is a short hike to the top and has a great 360 degree view. It is interesting to see the island from that perspective.

This place is special, almost spiritual. The views of Nantucket are amazing, if you're able, make the trip!

A trip to Altar Rock provides terrific views of the moors of Nantucket, the inner harbor and the northern part of the island (Monomoy, Shawkemo and Polpis). It is in Conservation land and has miles of trails where you can enjoy the island's vegetation, while getting some great exercise.

Bringing wine or any form of it is prohibited here but soda and water are ok then start enjoying the place while looking at the island 360 degrees because this place is the highest point of Nantucket.

It's worth finding your way through the moors to get to the rock/plaque that tells you you've arrived. Sweeping 360 degree view over the moors, cranberry bogs and out to Polpis Harbor. Best T-shirt ever was 30+ years ago that said "Ski Altar Rock". Find it and you'll understand it!

Hadn't been here in 23 years and well worth the off road trip! Views around the entire island! You can bike or offroad here. Just off Milestone.
