This is museum tells the story of African American struggles and triumphs. It can be gloomy at times but that is some the unfortunate experiences faced. All in all the staff was nice and the museum is well organized, fascinating, and the events there are great.

I've been here twice, and can say that this may be among the best museums in the country. Beware: this museum is INTENSE. The haunting sounds, the dark exhibits..it will give small children some fright. However, it is a great educational experience that you will never forget.

I mean wow, what can I really say!? I learned so much in one day that I didn't learn in years at school. I wish they had more exhibits though. I HIGHLY recommend this museum for anyone interested in history from the most horrid periods of history to more beautiful periods of time. There is two floors, to which there... More

Nice exhibits and check and see when traveling exhibits are in town and be sure to check out the slave ship, best knowledge of the voyage you can get instead of a book

I learned so much about the history of dolls in Africa and in this country. They've been used for fertility and for rites of passage in addition to play. I learned that I have so much to learn about dolls!

I attended with a group and we had an excellent docent who walked us through the history of the migration, the history of the area and explained the exhibits very well. I would recommend for all the family as a great history lesson.

The main exhibit, detailing the history of African Americans from Africa to present-day, was easily one of the most powerful exhibits I've ever seen in a museum. No expense was spared, including creating a walk through of a slave ship that left an incredible mark on us. There is also an impressive balance of telling a broad story while adding... More

Here is a museum work visiting for only $8.00!!!! Great exhibits, excellent guide, and stories that will stick with you. The Belly of the Beast portion in the "And Still We Rise" exhibit stands out the most to me. We walked through a replica of the ship that brought Africans over to during the middle passage. The dramatization of the... More
