I came here after a 1pm Saturday Guardian Building Pure Detroit tour. It is a nice statue, but there isn't anything special about it. This is one of those things where the meaning behind it is what makes it so highly-regarded, not the actual physicality of it. A quick visit is sufficient.

We stopped by The Spirit of Detroit while on a Detroit Segway tour and found it to be quite interesting. If you are in the area, I would recommend checking it out.

Mr. TwoInMaine found this statue cloying, annoying, and ugly. Ms. TwoInMaine thought it was uplifting and beautiful. It's across the street from the Joe Louis Monument ("The Fist") that Mr. TIM thought was wonderful and powerful, and Ms. TIM thought was banal and ugly. Together nearly 40 years. Keeps things interesting.

“The Spirit of Detroit” a Detroit icon, is synonymous with the city itself and the dedication of those who love the Motor City. Completed in 1958 this icon has witnessed the economic rise and fall of the city. The Spirit of Detroit lives and breathes as the city resurrects, reshapes and redefines what it means to be a "Detroiter"!

Art in the city is one of my favorite and this gem is down by the river. Out of nowhere and to the entrance of the historic Woodward Road. A great way to start our city walk.

Worth a visit. Large sculpture by the river. Nice photo op. My son was very impressed by this. Visit while you're walking around by the river.

This statue sets the tone for any Detroit trip. A city with great ambition that saw its role in contributing to humanity which is evident in the message and statue personifying Detroit. This is another quick but important stop in Detroit. See it on your way to the Guardian building. Also, I don't understand why the statue is obstructing the... More

Every city has it's own iconic image. This one is ours. It sits right on the edge of a sidewalk, so most passers-by are too busy to notice it. Hmm...

It represents the city. I remember when it walked over to the woman statue one night. But nicely done symbol of the city.
