We were looking for something to do after brunch with our daughter and we stumbled upon Belle Isle. It’s totally free but you can donate at the door. The aquarium is well done and the building is beautiful. There were some unusual exhibits and very...More

Apparently it is the oldest aquarium in America, which is cool in it's own right. But, if you're expecting some huge venue like other cities may have, or even Sea World, you will be disappointed. However, I knew that going into it and really enjoyed...More

Belle Isle has so many gems but this is a quick stop to see the oldest Aquarium in North America. The ceilings alone are worth the stop! Great little Aquarium for all ages.

Wonderful old building with beautiful tiled interior. Really interesting exhibits. Free to enter, which is amazing, whilst donations are accepted. Lots of information to accompany exhibits and if you’re lucky you’ll get to see a piranha feeding frenzy! Great tank featuring a number of rays,...More

This was the highlight of our day at Belle Isle - and you should drop whatever you are doing now and go there today (be aware, it's not open every day of the week). Detroit surprised us at every turn, and this aquarium was one...More

While the Belle Isle Aquarium can't match more modern aquariums for size or breadth of aquatic life, those same aquariums can't match this one for pure charm. There's many species of fish. Opened in 1904, it has a lot of history. The aquarium has been...More

If you're visiting Belle Isle, take the time to walk through this oldest aquarium in the country. At the first tank you'll be met by very sociable gouramis--the biggest I've ever seen. You'll be up close and personal with the fish an animals in the...More

I grew up just a few miles from the aquarium. Back in the 90s the place was pretty dumpy and in disrepair. We all felt jealous of big cities with their fancy new aquaria. But today, this has become a wonderful place to visit, and...More
