This building was constructed originally to commemorate the soldiers of WWI and it is a minument worthy of a city many times Ironwood's size. It features gorgeous statuary, stained glass, priceless woodwork and even a small museum. Threatened at one point with demolition, it now houses the Ironwood city offices and the local American Legion post.

Built as a tribute to those serving in war, the Memorial building is a working museum. Located in downtown Ironwood this building has been meticulously maintained. The stained glass mural windows in the auditorium tell a story of the war. And the stained glass in the stairwell is a striking visual.
The City has also preserved the areas history with a walk thru museum showcasing artifacts and highlighting the area over the last 200 years.
A wonderful piece of history.

Not much to say city business and the social security administration have offices there and where we vote. It was once much more but unfortunately so was Ironwood.

Thank you for your review of our building. We hope that you have time to visit the aspects of the building that so many treasure beyond the SSA and City offices. Next time you're in the area, you can check out the history room, front foyer with military memorials, stained glass features and the beautiful auditorium.

The Memorial Building, as it is called was built right after World War One as a tribute to those who died defending our country. The windows are beautiful mosaics of glass depicting scenes from the first world war. Large brass plaques hold the names of those who served from the Civil War to World War Two and are shadowed by a bronze statue of a Doughboy charging the line. Along the walls are cabinets filled with trophies of Ironwood's fire fighters competition with other departments from the State of Michigan. Some are from the 1890's and quite ornate. Beautiful murals ranging from encountering local bands of Native Americans to iron mining along with large 19th century photographs of what the area looked like with iron mines in full swing. The photos are reminders of Ironwood's contribution to everything from the Industrial Revolution to the Arsenal of Democracy, sending over 700 million tons of high grade ore to smelters in Ohio. From that ore came steel to produce everything from bridges to battleships.
