- Andrew RGlasgow, United Kingdom7 contributionsA Great Experience With Western Star That Made Great Memories.I booked the day with Western Star as a treat and surprise for my fiancee. Stuart accepted our booking and secured the date I requested. Stuart communicated with me via email, and communication was excellent. On the morning of our day with Western Star, Chris was waiting for us and he warmly greeted us. The day was very relaxed but structured. We helped Chris prepare the engine, which included cleaning the smoke box, setting the fire and oiling some moving parts. Once Western Star was ready, Chris explained how the engine works and it was time for some practice driving in the farm yard. It took us some time to master the controls. But Chris remained patient and good humoured. Lunch was next, and Chris cooked bacon and eggs on the shovel within the engine's fire. They also accommodate vegetarians, but tell them you're a vegetarian when you book your day. After lunch it was time to take Western Star out onto some local roads. We stopped at a stream and filled the water tank using Western Star's onboard pump. Chris then handed over the controls and off we went. But no need to worry. Chris stayed with us on the engine and intervened before we made any mistakes. At the end of the day, we helped Chris prepare Western Star to be left in the farm yard. Throughout the day, Chris's enthusiasm, knowledge and friendly approach kept us engaged and really made our day. As you will expect, you'll get dirty with coal dust and oil. So wear your boots, overalls or old clothes. But that's all part of the experience. We left Western Star on a high, with plenty of photographs and great memories we'll never forget. If you are reading this review, then you're thinking of booking a day with Western Star. Do it. You'll have a great time and make great memories.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2024

The booking process was extremely easy and well organised by Stuart who was very amiable and accommodating. On the day, Chris spent time showing us around Western Star explaining each part of the engine and how it functions, which was really interesting. Our son then had a wonderful time with the biggest smile on his face, preparing the engine - emptying the firebox, oiling everywhere and getting the fire going. Then it was time to have a drive around the yard to get used to the controls and manoeuvring under Chris's supervision. Chris was an excellent teacher, giving clear instructions throughout and was very encouraging and thoughtful. Before lunch, Chris gave us a tour around the workshop which housed other traction engines, old vehicles and machinery which was an unexpected bonus and fascinating. Lunch from the shovel was an absolute delight before hitting the road in the afternoon, steaming through the glorious Lakeland countryside. A perfect afternoon! We were very reluctant to leave Western Star as our memorable day came to a close. This was a truly special experience and one which we would highly recommend.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 August 2024
- helen j3 contributionsBucket list ticked!Booked the experience for my husbands 60th as he had always wanted to drive a traction engine! He really enjoyed it from start to finish. Chris allowed John to prepare the engine and after a short practice in the yard we were out on the open road! John was delighted to drive, under Chris's supervision, and I chose not to drive, but to enjoy the scenery from the footplate! Afterwards, we enjoyed a beer/cup of tea and they 'put the engine to bed!' An amazing day , worth every penny!Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 September 2024

This is the ultimate driving experience for any steam fan. On arrival l met Chris who was friendly and helpful and relaxing. I was given plenty of time to look round all the work going on in the machine shops. This is my 2nd time driving this engine, as I did a one-day course some 10 years ago, this return visit was for the full 2 day driving experience. I got stuck in cleaning the boiler tubes. This is where the old boiler suit comes in handy, getting dirty quick but it is great to do all the jobs. Next was to light the fire, then oiling the motion and bearings and putting coal on the fire. When all this was done and we had steam up l did a few driving movements around the yard to give me the feel, and what a feeling, you do feel the power of the engine and just how big it is. When I had shown l could partially remember what to do, and handle it, and learn a few new bits, we set off up the road calling at a stream to load more water. I was given the opportunity to drive and steer the traction engine and it is the ultimate feeling you could experience. The steering takes 110% concentration but is very enjoyable and you soon get the knack, and driving especially down hills, is also very rewarding added with a few cars on the road, or sheep for extra fun. I finished the day with a massive grin and will stick with me for a long time.

I did a one day driving experience run by Chris Harrison. Chris made me feel comfortable. He talks you through everything and you can do as much or as like as you want. I really enjoyed the day. I also had my family watching and they enjoyed watching in the yard and out on the road. The enginemans lunch was great, which was cooked on the shovel over the fire. I would recommend doing traction engine driving experience to anyone either if you like traction engines or not.

This was a surprise 60th birthday gift from my son who shares my interest in all things old and mechanical. You get to fully emerse yourself in the whole traction engine experience. When you arrive the engine has been preped with a warming fire to save a little time, but you then get to prepare the engine by cleaning the boiler pipes, seting the fire and lubricating the engine. Then after some intensive instruction you get to actually manouver the engine around the yard, getting used to steering and driving the engine (2 separate activities until you are an experienced traction engine driver) Once you have shown you can control the vehicle you actually get to drive it out along the public roads, negotiating tight country lanes, parked cars, and passing traffic. It sounds stressful but you know that Chris the instructor is ready to jump in and take over if things get too tricky. You are left with an overwhelming sense if achievement that you have managed to accomplish so much in such a short time. I would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone who does not mind getting their hands dirty

As an 84th Birthday present …I couldn't have wished for anything better. This surely was an experience of a lifetime!
If you like vintage machinery and engineering….. this is definitely for you !
Chris, the instructor, has been associated with the engine, a Fowler road locomotive named the Western Star all his life. His instruction and knowledge of steam engines, this engine and it's history in particular, is second to none. Coupled with his pleasant manner and skills as a firebox chef enhanced the experience enormously !
The day gave us an appreciation of how life used to be operating such engines from cleaning, oiling, lighting the fire and raising steam… right through to driving on the road.
The location in the south of the Lake District was stunning. Situated in beautiful countryside, just a nice place for such an activity, not crowded in any way yet not far from the main roads. It is also the home of John Fowler Engineering… the original manufacturer of the Western Star so the setting is particularly appropriate.
We had an added bonus at the end of the day... but not part of the schedule. Both me and Phil are engineers and were showing an interest so we were allowed to have an unofficial, limited look at the John Fowler workshops accepting that we have the necessary awareness in that environment. Our thanks go to the staff at Fowlers on this account !
With many thanks to Chris for an unforgettable day... absolutely brilliant and highly recommended !

A wonderful experience. We started with cleaning the smokebox & firetubes, ash pan and firebox, then the brasswork while the fire going going properly. Driving the engine in the farmyard and on the road was an emazing experience. I now appreciate just how skillful engine drivers are. A great day out, lots of great photographs.

My mate and I went for a two day driving course. We met up with Chris at the farm, was shown around the engine before lighting up and going for a drive around the farm yard. Once we were happy, and Chris was satisfied we weren't going to wreck his pride and joy, we set off for the village.
Day two was a nice long drive to the pub for lunch.
A fantastic experience and really enjoyed our time on the engine. Chris was an excellent tutor and left us to drive and steer his engine. Would recommend to anyone interested in experience a steam engine out on the road.

We did the half day experience. Chris was great at explaining how everything worked and got us involved in preparing the engine. We learnt how to drive and steer the engine in the yard as well as out on the road. It is a very interesting, informative and fun day. Would definitely recommend.

My girlfriend booked a half day experience with Chris and his Steam Engine. I had a fantastic time and would recommend this to anyone. Chris explains everything to you, let's you do as much as you would like and does everything he can to give you a great experience. He even gave us a quick tour of the yard and some of the workshops which are full of steam engines and tractors!
After explaining how to look after the engine and giving us both a driving lesson he took us out on the road for a drive through the village. Once we got to the end of the village he gave us the controls and happily filmed us on our phones whilst giving instructions driving back. Fantastic day out.
