During the War of 1812, the British constructed a small fort on the highest point of the island, to better protect Fort Mackinac. Originally named Fort George, it was renamed by the Americans, following their return in 1815. The Americans continued to man the outpost for a few years, but eventually abandoned it. In 1934 a reconstruction, carried out by the Works Progress Administration and based on original plans, was completed. It was replaced by the current version in 2015.

Although challenging if riding a bike or walking up to this highest point of the Island, the view is worth the effort. It is nice to just go there, relax, and soak in the beautiful scenic loveliness that is sure to remain in your memory.

Nice reconstruction, and an nteresting bit of history. Located close to other attractions. A good addition to the Island history.

We rented bikes and went to the fort after breakfast. The newly rebuilt fort sits at the very top of the island and it is a lot of uphill pedaling to get there. If I had it to do over I would load bikes on...More

The walk(or bike ride) is steep, but the history of the fort and the panoramic view will make the trek completely worth your efforts!
