Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The four tombs of nobles are worth the 247 steps to get there. The guard will open each tomb for you. It is better to have a guide to point out the more important hieroglyphics and paintings.
There is a rest house which is a good place to sit, recover and have a soft drink after visiting the tombs.
It is worth the effort to get here, as it is a bit out of the way.

As you drive south of Minya, the first thing that you will see are what look like thousands of large eggs built up into the limestone cliffs. This is a Muslim cemetery.
The country people here are also very conservative but dress in lots of bright colors - reds, blues, oranges - it is very pretty to see against the backdrop of green fields.
There are 39 tombs in the limestone cliffs dating back as far as 2000 BC (Approx). After climbing the typically high number of steps, you have a lovely view of the Nile Valley below. There must have been an event on the day we visited as we also had background music from the local village below.
We visited 4 of the tombs. They were all very well preserved. One in particular (Tomb of Amenemhat I think) had very detailed pictures carved into the wall and the color was astounding; a lot of vivid greens, not the normal color that you see in Egyptian temples. I would have loved a photo but unfortunately you are not able to.
Well worth a visit. The area and tombs are different to what you see in the rest of Egypt.

We visited Beni Hassan as part of our Nile Rd Tour with Select Egypt. Like Valley of the Kings, not all tombs are open so its pot luck when you arrive. We saw at least five different ones, including the famous one depicting wrestling on the walls.Entry is 30LE ea to the site. Once though the visitor centre you climb up to the surrounding cliff face to where the tombs are. Toilets are situated at the ticket office. no cafes nearby. The guard will open extra tombs for a small fee. The heiroglyphs and paintings depicting everyday life are really worth seeing. from the tombs you have a beautiful view of the surrounding Nile valley and Minya city.

Beni Hasan is not far from Minya and is situated on the countryside with beautiful surroundings. From the graves wich is in the desert area, up the cliffs, you have an excellent view of the valley.
The nobles tombs are from Middle Kingdom and contains images of daily life in Egypt and are very lively and interesting. Unfortunately for me, no pictures allowed inside the tombs. Hopefully more people will come and visit this important site in Egypt!

No photography allowed and it's a lot of steps up a hill in the heat
My photos here http://www.flickr.com/photos/elaref/sets/72157634478966067/ show you the surrounding area, the climb & the Rest-Centre.
Although my 'thing' is photography
If anyone doesn't feel up to the climb, the Rest Area is cool and clean, with local artists work on display/for sale.
We saw the tombs of Khety, Baget III, and Khnemhotpe III.
Further info on these can be found at http://egyptsites.wordpress.com/2009/02/14/beni-hasan/

The most stunning set of Middle Kingdom tombs easily visitable in Egypt. By far the most interesting thing on this stretch of the Nile.

While the village itself is of no value, the tombs are really great. Apart from their historical value, they exhibit marvelous wall paintings and reliefs.
However, you need to climb more than 140 steps, while sun is not really tender. No access for handicapped, unfortunately!!

Get ready to walk 144 or so steps to the tombs in the hot sahara desert. They are very well preserved. Remember to buy a photo pass so you don't get bothered everytime you go into a temple or tomb. It is 300EP and you can use the pass at EVERY site in Egypt. Only buy it ONCE! Take your time to visit surrounding sites of Tuna-al-gebel;the necropolis of Hermopolis during hte time of Akhenaten. I did not have time as I was trying to get to Tel-Amarna and I wish I would have arranged an extra day to explore more.

Are the steps very difficult? I would possibly be better just walking up the side of the steps in the sand/stone part but is that allowed? Going in September 2019. Thank you.

Yes walk at the side of the stairs. Much easier. Most likely you will be the only people there. It’s worth the climb.

Why does the photography permit cost 300 EGP AT EVERY SITE near Minya when comments say that it is valid for all of Egypt except a few places?
