- Sailor M1 contributionThe Experience was Amazing!Great adventure! There was so much to do and I was never bored! Would recommend! Check out the golden Budha statue or look at the beautiful architecture of the building. The tour guides and locals are so kind! The food tastes delicious and is cheap to an American such as myself! Again, I would recommend a trip here. This is sure to make its mark in your memories.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 October 2023
- nisaur38 contributionsHistorical and religious significanceThough we are not Buddhist but found the place very relaxing. But the crowd is too much here. A place where you will found peace and relaxation specially near Bodhi tree. Here lord Buddha did meditation at seven places for seven days in the compound in various states. We took guide and he explain everything wrt historical and religious significance of place and took 300rs. There are many monasteries of different countries and you should visit few to appreciate different art and culture confluence in one small town. A minimum minimum half day . Only Mobile and electronics are not allowed and rest allowed and you can take them along. So better keep mobile and other things at hotel or somewhere safe. Though there are lockers but few and you have to wait as per crowd. We covered Bodhgaya and Nalanda from Patna in one day which was a bad decision. Ideally it should be one day at Bodhgaya , stay at rajgira( may be veerayartan) and next day rajgira and Nalanda. We take taxi and we fixed 5000 for all this. Later he forcefully ask 11000 and took amount taking advantage of being a tourist . In our Bihar and Jharkhand tour we almost encountered same things that left a bad image of state. I won’t come these states again. We tried Ola and Savari outstation but there service will cancel at 11th moment on two instances. Few taxi operators asked exorbitant money. Though places are good but I will not recommend my nearest one to visit the states. India has got lot of good places to explore in a lifetime. These are my personal views only. I am writing this to make aware people of these things and make informed decision. If you have some trustworthy or reference from some Homestay…. Than take them along…Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 December 2023

A descendent of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha became bodhi is adjacent to the entrance of the temple, protected by stone railings. The architecture of the temple is very similar to the Hindu buildings contemporary with the time period of Emperor Ashoka. A tall pyramidal stupa similar to the still extant South Indian Hindu style of architecture. There is a throng of people trying to get inside, not helped by the fact that the interior is surprisingly small. There’s an image of Buddha directly opposite the entrance. A beautiful place to visit even if you’re not Buddhist. Note that camera phones are no longer allowed inside, although still cameras are and there's a charge for that as well. How times have changed.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 February 2024

I like to come to the Temple by 05:00 and wait the opening with monks, and after that my morning meditation starts under the Bodhi Tree. Definitely will return to The Mahabodhi Temple.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 23 June 2024

I was in Bodhgaya for a night and visited this temple in the evening and the morning, both a little before the aarti. You cannot take in your mobile phone and have to check it in a locker (free). However, you may carry a DSLR camera after paying Rs. 300. The temple complex is massive, really pretty and just so clean. It was so refreshing to see it after having visited the beautiful (but very dirty) Vishnupad Temple (sad that the priests cannot keep that temple clean as it is so beautiful). The 30 minutes aarti was divine and sitting by the Bodhi tree, while listening to the chants was very peaceful. There were so many birds chirping that it was mesmerizing. I really loved the place and would definitely make a trip to Bodhgaya just to see it again. BTW, the monks were wonderful - always smiling and so helpful.

A must visit temple for people visiting Gaya. Built by King Ashok and maintained by many others it is a place where people come for many things. Organised tours are also available. Mobile phones are not allowed inside the main temple campus.

The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an ancient and excavated Buddhist temple. It is said to the place where Lord Buddha have attained enlightenment. The temple has been a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus and Buddhists. The temple has been rebuilt and restored; the top of the temple has been restored with Gold. It has an expansive and well-maintained temple complex. The entry to the temple complex is through tight security check, no entry allowed without facemask, neither any tobacco products allowed inside. There are provisions for free mobile and shoe locker just outside the temple entry point. Other than main temple, the complex also houses Bodhi tree, Mucalinda lake, Cankamana etc. We hired a local guide for better appreciation of these places. When we visited in the evening, there was moderate crowd, we could enter the main temple within short time. To enter the main temple, there are couple of downward steps from the ground / entry level. The atmosphere of the temple was serene. A must visit place.

Had an excellent tour around the temple with the tour guide- Deepak Kumar, whose family over generations have specialised in giving these tours around the temple. His knowledge on general history and philosophy of Buddhism is unmatched and unparallel. The visit was made memorable and exceptional and we almost relived the period as Deepak took us around the temple. I strongly recommend taking him as a guide in case you wish to visit the temple. He is well versed in multiple languages- English, Hindi and a foreign language too. His number is 7992452814. Do experience the temple tour with him, it would be worth it.

The Mahabodhi Temple is one of my favourite place of all the locations that I have traveled to so far. It's calm, serene, peaceful and truly beautiful. I visited the temple at night this time and because of that there were very few tourists so, it was very quite as well. All you could hear was the chants of the praying monks.

The temple gives you a unique feel of inner peace which cannot be explained. Unlike the Hindu temples in the North, there is no crowding or clamouring for money by 'priests'. In spite of the large number of visitors and devotees, it is quit calm and quiet. For those interested there are guides whio can speak in both English and Hindi. Since the devotees there are mainly from outside India (Thailand, China, Japan, Far East and Sri Lanka) almost everyone understands English and many can communicate in English. There is a cloak room area where we deposit our belongings. There is a book shop near the cloak room which sells good Buddhist literature. The curio shop there too is quite nice. A great place to be in when visiting Gaya/Bodh Gaya

Even if you do not achieve enlightenment here, you will definitely find peace and serenity. The holiness of the area is palpable and with so many people praying and meditating, the area is palpably rich in soothing vibrations.
Buddhist monks from all over the world come here to meditate. We also saw junior monks in training perform their customary worship. It is enough to just sit under the Bodhi tree and to absorb the peace.
A point to note: no mobile phones are allowed inside the temple premises.

No mobiles, cameras, or bags are allowed inside the premises. You can keep them in the lockers available next to the temple. Very peaceful, recommend visiting in the early morning or evening. Guide facility is available if needed.

Hello
We want to visit in early March next year. We have a few questions for staff and past visitors.
1. How small or big the camera should be to come in? Mine is a big-ish DSLR camera, would that be allowed?
2. What is the crowd around that time of the year? Big, small, medium? any possible other events going on?
3. What is the best or better time to visit?
4. What is the temperature/weather like in early March?
thanks so much for your help.

camera size is OK. you need to pay some nominal fee. you will find medium size crowd but very discplile. During late evening..canvass for photography of temple and surrounding will be awesome in full moon .Weather will be pleasant after spring in March. The best time if you plan during Mahabodhi Festival.

Is there any special reasons to go there at 8pm? If you do you have little time for prayers and everything is in a rush.To escape darkness I'm already out by 6.30pm as it was already dark and I head off for dinner at Hotel Thathagat restaurant. Most people go to Bodhgaya for prayers and not sight seeing. Each time you go to the temple or leave the temple, you will be harassed by street vendors who are very persistent. You escape from one, another one will come after you. If you are local Indian you might escape but other foreigners they will block your way with their wares and ask you to buy. You can forget about walking meditation as you will meet scores of them. By the way, I went in early October and it was very hot. The Tibetan Om cafe was not opened yet.
