Savor the smells and sights of an 1870s general store as you sample the wares or try a game of checkers. When the railroad bypassed the small town of West Newton, the Harkin Store was forced to close with much of the unsold inventory still on the shelves, where it remains today.

Neat little shop, nice little drive

Its a short drive away from New Ulm, but a cute little old timey store set up along the river like it was in the "olden days". They have a little gift shop too. The kids got a... read more

One of our favorite stops in New Ulm. Very fascinating history and museum. Great little gift shop and beautiful countryside and drive.

Being part of the MN History Museum, they charge $6/person to go into a one room "store." Even though we made the drive out, it wasn't worth the extra expense so we left.

Take a trip back in time. Great stop for the whole family. Knowledgeable guides can usually answer most any questions about this historical General Store.

It was a hot, humid, sticky day at Harkin Store. The parking area is in front of the store, but across the road. To get to the store, you need to cross the road and climb a rather long set of stairs. As we were contemplating the stairs, however, the interpreters called down the hill, encouraging us to drive up, rather... More

The store is a great piece of history. When we arrived we read the historical marker that explained the origins of the general store. Then we proceeded to the store. We were told it was $6 each to enter but there would be a talk about the history of the store. We paid our $12 walked in and a woman... More

What a cute place out in the middle of no where. A very knowledgeable man explained everything to us- we could have spent much longer but the mosquitos were horrid - they need to spray. I strongly recommend the store. They have several handmade items from people in the community. I loved my Christmas ornament of the store, chicken pin... More

This is a wonderful place to go enjoy history! The people working there and with the crafts, are dressed in period clothing. Inside the store you feel like you went back in a time machine. Some of the crafts that have been there are sauerkraut making, peeling apples the old time way, and on the 4th of July they had... More

The Harkin Store is a must see for people interested in Minnesota History. The store still has much of its original inventory which is a real treasure. Being off the beaten path, it retains its original setting.
