About
Completed in 1870 The Washington County Historic Courthouse served as the administrative and judicial center of the county for more than a century. In 1971, the Historic Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest standing courthouse in Minnesota. In 1975, official business moved to the new government center and a new vision for this architectural gem was developed which included history-related exhibits and activities. Today, FREE guided public tours are offered Monday through Saturday and include the historic courtroom, exhibit rooms and old 1900 county jail. On a tour, your guide will lead you through some important historic moments in Washington County history while touring the historic courtroom, 1900's County Jail, and exhibit spaces. Donations are accepted. In addition to public tours, the Historic Courthouse also offers private tours, school & large group tours, community events and meeting & special event space.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a quick stop but well worth the time. The veterans memorial across the street is also a must see.

I enjoyed the guided tour of the Courthouse and Jail. They had a wonderful room with a bicycle collection from WAY back and besides the wonderful interior the jail tour was great. You learned just how the jailers WIFE worked to keep the prisoners fed. Free will donation made this an affordable stop!

The historic courthouse was worth the visit. They do free guided tours. Perhaps the most intriguing part was the jail area. You can see graffiti on the walls of the cells left by inmates. If you love history this is a must see.

Stillwater is full of shops and restaurants. For an interesting change of pace, head up the hill from downtown and visit the historic courthouse and jail. When we visited in December they had a Victorian Christmas display throughout the building and a civil war exhibit. Very interesting and staff was very helpful with facts and tidbits about the area. The old jail, once home to the Younger gang, is in stark contrast to modern day jails. Take a break from shopping and visit the courthouse.

We saw the courthouse while visiting the war memorial across the street and decided to stop in and walk around. A docent greeted us and offered to show us around since no one else had shown up for the 10am tour. We also watched a short video on the history of the area and the courthouse that was really well done and very informational. When the video was done we wandered around the the Docent met us at the far end of the courthouse where the old jail is, she opened it and let us check it out. I was surprised to see that the Younger brothers were held there for awhile when they were moved due to a fire. The display room near the front door is full of artifacts and interesting memorabilia from the early days of Stillwater, including a lot of cool stuff about the Prohibition era. I recommend stopping in, it's not a log tour, but very informative and fun.

We feel so thankful communities have chosen to preserve buildings like the Washington County Historic Courthouse. These buildings remind us of the past and the workmanship that has gone into buildings like this one. Every time we go to Stillwater one of the things we always go and see is this building and tell other people to do so too.

The craft show was small but has some nice things at the show. Everyone running the show was really great and friendly. The old jail is really great. How simple times use to be. I always wanted to go in this building and check it out. So the craft show was the perfect opportunity. If you are looking for something to do for a few hours then try the fall craft show at the courthouse in stillwater MN.

We took the guided tour of the old courthouse, now a historical building used for other activities. I would strongly recommend taking the guided tour even though you can walk through the building on your own. Built in about 1870 and renovated since then, it is full of history and interesting to visit. The area that generated the greatest discussion was the old jail, which was in the back part of the courthouse. The jail was certainly a very grim place to spend one night, not to mention the fact that a person could have spent a year here. You have to see the jail cells to appreciate how it was there, especially the solitary confinement cell.

Great tour of this historic courthouse. We decided to take the tour once we had driven by it on the narrated Trolley tour. Well worth the hour if you've got it. The restoration alone is worth seeing. All done locally. Makes you appreciate the rest of the restoration going on in the town.

This building was a working courhouse when I was growing up in Stillwater, and has been beautifully preserved. They have jail tours where you can get a taste of what life was like "back then" when things weren't quite so "cushy". Best time of the year to visit is when they are decorated for Chirstmas - absolutely gorgeous!
