A second visit with a young enthusiast. Signage is getting better but could explain a bit more. Great and cheap cafe. Good visit

This is a fantastic place to visit you could spend all day just wondering around and looking at the exsibits Where are are more historical places out side which help make the railways like old origanel railway locomotives. In side the main exibition hall there is a masive collection of locos and coaches. I would have given five stars but... More

Alas since we last visited only the main collection building is open. This houses a good range of well interpreted trains. The added attractions of the heritage buildings are now only open on infrequent tours. The place just gives the impression of being half shut which is no doubt due to low funding. Good children's playground.

On entering the main building, there is no welcome desk, and no handout or boards to show the layout of the museum. We wandered around the exhibits, many of which did not have any explanation. Those that did, were on hanging cards, so the writing was on its side. By the exit, was an impressive looking loco, with fencing around... More

This is free and is well worth a visit. The staff are very helpful and it was very enjoyable. Why didn't I give it five stars? The food in the cafe was poor although the staff were nice and the coffee was fine. Once I got outside there wasn't much helpful signage. Nevertheless, if you like railways don't miss it... More

My wife took our 3 year old last week and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. They went on one of the days that has a guided tour every few hours and he listened when the guide took them around. He enjoyed it that much he has been asking all week to go back to the museum. So we took him again... More

Shildon was at the heart of the birth of the railways and its links to industry giants like Timothy Hackworth makes this a great destination for history and train buffs. The facility is modern and displays the engines very well indeed and hosts special events during the year. Staff at the museum are very friendly and helpful.

This is a small museum and as such they appear to try harder to make you enjoy your visit. The was not a good start, I looked at a map the night before, so knew where it was but took 1 hour longer than it should to get there, no way was I going to ask for directions! I have... More

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The displays were great and the explanations were fulsome and interesting. Nice wee cafe as well and the staff were the friendliest.

Advertised as open all year round all we found to be open was the main collection hall. The welcome building and other points of interest nearer the entrance were all closed with no explanation. The main collection hall itself was good with lots of friendly staff and interesting locos.
