My husband and I toured Ravenswood in 1974. Charles and Mary Leonard showed us through what was then their private home .Charles was very serious, while Mary was VERY funny. It was a beautiful Fall day, the leaves were changing colors. We stood on the porch chatting with Charles and Mary...extremely interesting. It was such a wonderful experience, I wrote them a thank you, after we returned home. Much to our (very pleasant) surprise, we received a Christmas card from them. This started a correspondence with Mary, that lasted for a long time. She was such a wonderful person, and I have kept the cards. It is a beautiful memory, and I always intended to return, but never have.

Went here all the way back in the 80's.. and I still remember it. We were allowed to investigate the attic and we teens were even allowed out on the widows walk. Sad to hear they no longer give tours.. I seem to remember a haunted music box. It was really quite lovely.

My father-in-law knew the Leonard family personally as HIS father was a traveling preacher and met the family at a tiny, white church not far from the homestead. My father-in-law and Charles were young boys at that time. Our traditional vacation spot is the Current River much farther south and east of Boonville. However, we were curious as to the condition this piece of OUR family history. Through many phone calls by family members, we were able to reach Charles and he met us at the grand house for a tour. He placed no boundaries on our extended family of 10 and allowed us to roam and take photos. We were respectful of the property and left things untouched. Aside from the fading of colors, the pealing of wallpaper, and the the springs punching through the horse-hair upholstered furniture, the home was as if it was still in use. Rumors my father-in-law shared of hauntings were that the old Victrola would suddenly start playing and the SOUND of dishes being thrown and broken in the kitchen (never evidence, just sound). The red brick structure with white trim is impressive. We are a d-i-y family and have always dreamed of refurbishing the estate to its former glory. We are happy that the Leonard family has held onto the piece! Historical Societies have declined many times to register the mansion and, therefore, put any funds toward restoration. The Leonards hold other bits of history. They bred the bull that won at the World's Fair in St. Louis, I believe in 1904. The trip was extra special to us as my two sons have their photo with the suit of armor. Just as their father and his brother did when they were children.

We were very disappointed to find out they were no longer giving tours. We did meet one of the grandsons who was very nice but shared with us that they are no longer touring.
