Just a block or two on the outskirts of city center, the Red House Interpretive center brings together multiple exhibitions: an early 1800s exhibit of the early settlers' lifestyle in the area; a virtual copy of an real trading post, and the gardens on the North side of the house reproduce what gardens might have looked like a couple hundred years ago. The house is also a good venue for weddings, concerts, conferences and celebrations. Admission is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. The place is open between may and October, on Saturdays only, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.

We went to the Red House Interpretive Center to see and hear about the history of the house. The Red House is located just off Main Street and the center commemorates the life of community founder and French-Canadian, Louis Lorimier. They also tell you about the Lewis and Clark visit to the house in November, 1803. The Interpretive Center houses an early 1800's exhibit that reflects the lives of the early settlers of the old Cape Girardeau district. The 3 Tour guides that were in this small house did a good job explaining the Red House History to everyone.

We recently had the opportunity visit Red House on a Mississippi River Boat cruise. It was hands down the venue offered on our cruise. Being a fan off early 1800s history and have done fur trade reenacting I may be a little partial. I found the interpreters to be extremely knowledgeable of the era. In fact I spent most of the time BSing with the man that did the demonstration and found out we had attended the same national events. Very nice displays of early frontier artifacts.
