Very welcoming. Wonderful interior and delightful entertaining area outside. And of course - good wines.
This cellar door is located on the outskirts of Richmond and you get a sense of the history of the property driving up to the car park past the lovely Georgian convict-built sandstone house. The cellar door is located in the old sandstone Coach House. There is also a bar outside with under cover and open lawn seating with a very pleasant picturesque view over the surrounding countryside. There were a range of tastings available. Two of the offerings were $10 per person for a choice from 2 sets of 4 wines (one being a Pinot Grigio, a Riesling, a Pinot Noir and a Cane Cut Riesling and the other being two Rieslings - one from each of their two vineyards, a chardonnay and a Pinot Noir). There was also a $10 cost to taste two of the more premium wines (a chardonnay and a Pinot Noir), $10 for their top of the range Pinot Noir and $5 for their Syrah. We ended up tasting several of the Rieslings, chardonnays and Pinot Noirs and all were very agreeable. Our host (Joycee?) was very friendly and informative. We will return when next in Hobart to enjoy pizza and a bottle on the lawn.

    Wine tasting experience.
Wine tasting experience was top class. The (50+?) gentleman who served us was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He was also very encouraging of our 20 year old inexperienced wine-drinking daughter. A$15 per five tasting platter. A$30 for (meagre) cheese platter.

A visit to Pooley's Wines is a must!
I live and work on a vineyard/winery in NSW and was in Hobart on holidays with my sisters. We were going for a drive to Richmond and had been advised to stop at Pooley's Wines. We were welcomed so warmly by India, who told us the Pooley story and talked us through the wines in such an engaging and knowledgeable way that I offered her a job if she ever moved to NSW! She is an asset to the business ... we also loved the wines and arranged to bring some with us and ship more home.

We had been recommended Pooley Wines by our family who live in Hobart. As former residents of Hobart we enjoy supporting small businesses. However, on this occasion we were very disappointed. We had not made a booking and were told by the male Matri D we could sit outside in the 'hot' sun. And was it hot, a 29 degree day in the scorching heat. We then viewed the menu, wishing to have a cheese platter, after lining up to order for some time, we were told it was only pizza on the order. I'm not sure why we were given a menu with platters if it was just pizza! We ordered, white wine a cider and a coke all was warm and unpleasant. The pizza arrived, it was delicious, but the size of a small side plate for $15, was way over priced. The bathroom was dirty and to only have 2, was not adequate for the number of people in attendance. I spent most of my time waiting for a vacant bathroom. Hobart gossip is it that Mr Pooley has made a lot of money from this business. Well Mr Pooley, buy some umbrellas, build new toilets, ensure your drinks are placed in a fridge, fix your menus and ensure you staff are pleasant to their customers.

The beautiful old sandstone building would make it worth a stop alone but Pooley wines are exceptional and our tasting host John was brilliant. We walked away with 2 single vineyard wines and 2 blends that we look forward to drinking in the future. Stand out wine for us was the Margaret Pooley Riesling.

Thank you so much for your feedback on your visit. We are very lucky to have such a beautiful venue to showcase our wines. I will pass on your feedback to John not that he needs any encouragement!! We hope to see you again soon. Enjoy your wines

Went to Pooley for a tasting feeling very expectant. Underwhelming is putting it mildly. They have three tasting options at $5, $15 & $25. There are between 4 - 6 (small) pours in these options which depend on the standard of the wines. We went the $15 option (so $30 for 2 of us). This option had two single vineyard pinots including the Cooinda pinot. The service was very slow which appeared to us to be due to not enough staff at a relatively busy time. They actually turned away some people who did not have a booking.
The pourings were meagre which was the first problem. Second, we decided to buy one pottle to offset the tasting charge, only to be told that because we wanted to buy one bottle there would still be one tasting charge of $15. That was not stated in their conditions of tasting and is not consistent with the practices of other cellar doors.
So ... slow service; aggressive pricing; and a nasty snip at the end when purchasing. A classic case of a producer leveraging off their reputation rather than considering the customer. A shame because this is not the Pooley we recall from a previous visit in 2017. Our advice would be to give them a miss and go to other cellar doors where people are treated better.

A very disappointed visit to the winery was had by our group of 6. We had organised three wineries, had a bus drive us around, and even the bus driver raved about Pooley Wines however, excellent views, and a beautiful building could not help make this a pleasant experience.
We were not greeted, and had to find a table ourselves./. Once seated, a wine glass was broken between two of us as the staff member was setting the table, and we were made to feel like the worst in the world for this having happened.
As a different staff member served our wines, the service was perfunctory, and delivered with zero personality.
I would suggest our experience is not everyones, as I observed a very different treatment for other customers - not sure if this is normal?

This came highly recommended by locals and was one of the best wineries discovered on our two week Tassie trip. The tasting was great with such a friendly server who was very knowledgeable without being pretentious. It was just such a lovely genuine experience. We left with two bottles of the Chardonnay

Pooley is one of the best wine tasting experiences in Tasmania due to its setting, wines and the presentation.
The tasting is held in a beautiful Georgian manor, and the people running it have an obvious passion for the wine and the location.
The slab of soil on the wall dramatically demonstrate the differences between their 2 vineyards every bit as much as their taste.
Like most paces these days the tasting is not free, but comes at 3 price points – the everyday wines, their top label, and a pricier exclusive range.
These wines aren’t cheap. But they are very good, and being able to taste pinots from different vineyards, for example, is a unique experience.
There’s a café on site offering pizzas and grazing boards, or Richmond is 5 minutes away if you’re planning to lunch.

We had a very informative and enjoyable wine tasting hosted by Rachel. The wines were all top notch but Rachel’s knowledge made it all the more interesting and it was lovely to hear about the family who own the winery and a little of their history too. Thank you Rachel, we had a really great time.

We have visited twice this year and on both occasions could not fault the food nor wine. We opted to sit outside in the sun to enjoy the day as it was slightly cooler at the tables under cover. However, we noticed on both visits that a number of patrons were struggling with the sloping tables. Glasses of wine had to be propped up with water jugs to stop them sliding, one mans beer can slid the length of the long table and a child almost tipped himself up getting out of the chair. Slight terracing or levelling around the tables would take minimal work and finish off an otherwise lovely area.

Hi Tassie1301. Thank you so much for your review, for visiting twice already this year and also your feedback. This issue has since been rectified as it was observed by our team to have caused some issues. By relocating the tables due to social distancing we didn't foresee the issues we would have with slopes. We have repositioned the tables now and you'll be glad to know they're much more level and still abiding to the social distancing requirements. We look forward to your next visit and once again, thank you for your comments.

A lovely setting, wonderful buildings and inviting venue. A little more sophisticated than most cellar door experiences with a range of priced tastings. Wines were lovely - we liked the reds, especially the Pinot noir which we bought. Pricey.
