Our taxi driver stopped here for us to take a look around. It is a small but beautiful church with around 15 rows of pews and a wood planked ceiling. There was no one around but the church is open for anyone to enter.

Richmond is a beautiful, quaint little village with the old church, stone bridge, scale replica of original Hobart, and miscellaneous shops. Visited here as part of Tours Around Tasmania. St John’s Catholic Church, built in 1835, is the oldest Catholic Church in Australia and it...More

Lit a candle inside the church. Beautiful windows and church mostly in original condition. A walk through the cemetery adjoining gave me an insight in how tough life was for survival.

Unfortunately I didn't get the privilege of seeing inside the Church. I did spend some time at the building and the cemetery. It is stunning. What a beautiful part of history to preserve. I would recommend that you visit this site. Just lovely.

I was surprised not only with the beautifully built church. The cemetery was lovely to walk through and revealed its history. Also the arbour held a beautiful memorial that brought me to tears. Very emotional memorial tributes to see and homour.

The Church is interesting as I read that it is the oldest Catholic Church in Australia. The stained glass windows were good, but otherwise quite similar to other Churches of that era (understandably).

The Catholics of Richmond seem to be doing much better than their Anglican brethren. With a very smart school opposite and finely maintained paved areas around the church this gives an aura of prosperity. The interior of the church is more narrow than it seems...More

Richmond is a town chock full of historical landmarks, and St John the Evangelist is one of the most remarkable. It was constructed in 1836, using the design skills of a convicted convict (for swindling) named Frederick Thomas. Thomas was a Hobart architect sentenced to...More

Oldest Catholic Church is Australia worth a visit if in the area. Quite a bit of history and there is a cemetery as well - which I hear the locals are dying to see... Step inside and light a candle.
