- Ski-U-MikeLincoln, Nebraska30 contributionsUnexpected gem not to missBlown away by this unassuming, unexpected gem hiding in the US Midwest; holds up against world-renowned art destinations. The Impressionist collection alone would be worth an admission fee but it’s free. A can’t miss for real.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- MelissaWPShorewood, Illinois510 contributionsneat attractionWe spent three hours here on a Sunday afternoon in early September. We walked all around and say everything except the photography exhibit which was temporarily under wraps. Some rooms were cool in temperature and some were just regular air temperature. The Beautiful Disruption special interactive activity was not at all worth it. We had to return a few days later in the early morning to walk around the sculpture park outside, which was neat, because it was way too hot on Sunday and much cooler later.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- Julie HSiloam Springs, Arkansas36 contributionsDo not miss this museum!I can’t say enough about how amazing this museum is. My family had been to a concert the night before. We wanted something fun to do before going home that afternoon. The weather forced us to stay indoors, so we chose this museum. We were so happy with our decision. After 3 hours we had toured most of the main floor. We never made it to other areas. When we arrived the person at the counter asked us a few questions and suggested we wait to buy tickets to the special exhibit since it was our first time visiting. He told us that we could purchase tickets at the entrance to the exhibit if we wanted to. He was so right! There is so much to see. I do wish that it was a little more kid-friendly. We love visiting museums and my kids know how to behave in these settings. Our 10 year old was asked to not do this or that a couple of times before attaching herself to me. I never thought anything of what she was doing. I understand they have a tremendous responsibility to care for this art. It might be a good idea to be more clear about their expectations for patrons. A sign or two would probably do the trick. We are already planning a trip back to Kansas City just for this museum!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 December 2023
- KhawneeEstes Park, Colorado823 contributionsGreat museum with interesting exhibitsWe came to visit the special Monet exhibit and were pleasantly surprised by the Evelyn Hofer exhibit which was included. The Monet exhibit could have had more of his works owned by the museum, but it was still nice. Water lilies are always great to see. This museum is a must see. (FYI We’ve been watching for Wayne Thibaud’s Star Boat to reappear in the modern art area. Guess we are still waiting )Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 February 2024

There is a lot to see both inside and outside! The mini golf course is a must when it’s available and the holes are replica of famous pieces in the museum.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 April 2024

It was free and they had a Festival of India program happening during my visit with lots of performances and activities. The exhibits were all interesting and I enjoyed walking through all the different sections. Friendly museum staff as well. It was a pleasant visit.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 April 2024
- Tim ASeattle, Washington74 contributionsAstounding Encyclo-Museum with the Good StuffHow had I not known about this world-class museum? Seriously. A heartbreaking Caravaggio that yanks you in from the hallway like a magnet. Outstanding collection of impressionists and post-impressionists. Greek and Roman sculptures. A few bell ringers by painters like Cranach the Elder. A fragment of a Bosch. Warm and welcoming staff. Although there were lots of school children, they were all respectful and engaged. The museum is free, though parking was $14. Totally worth it.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2024
- 523sandraoOklahoma City, Oklahoma871 contributionsKC Girls’ TripWe spent four hours, including a delightful lunch at the museum cafe, and we could have stayed longer. This free museum is one of the best in the mid-west, if not the country! There’s something for everyone, including the lovely landscaped grounds. Tip—To avoid $14 charge for museum parking, get there when it opens at 10 am on the weekend & you’ll find lots of free street parking and in lots across the street.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 June 2024

My friend group and I spent a good chunk of time here and we could’ve stayed even longer. The museum itself is just stunning. There is metered street parking nearby and you can wander on to the grounds without any fee. There are many sculptures beyond the Shuttlecocks and a nice easily accessible path to follow. The grounds also have a mini golf course and a food vendor.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2024

This museum was listed in the book, "1,000 Places to See in The United States and Canada Before You Die." It definitely deserved its place. The museum was free, which right away is a great perk. We paid $10 for parking. That seemed a lot so we drove around a bit but all of the surrounding streets have a no parking ban. However, it was covered and worth it since we didn't pay admission. The museum had a wide variety of pieces. We as usual spent the majority of our time in the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist wings. There were three Van Goghs which is more than I've seen in one museum. Of course there was prints of Cezanne's Sainte-Victoire and Degas' Dancer statue (there seems to be those in every museum). There were some beautiful PIsarros and Caillebottes that I hadn't seen before. The museum had an exhibit about Nazi-looted art which was quite fascinating. There was also an imported French church and the cafeteria area seemed to be set up for Chinese New Year. There was a dance performance in the center while we were there. We stayed two hours and did not get to all exhibits and did not have time to walk the sculpture gardens, which looked amazing as well.

The museum's curators are quite peculiar people. The collection is not great in the first place, with too few masterpieces as its core to produce a lasting impression. But removing two of them and hide them in the vault reduces that impression even more. A friend told me that it's a normal practice at this place to remove one famous canvas, but this time they exceeded expectations by taking the Rembrandt and El Greco out.
The Nefertari (not Nefertiti) exhibition was disappointing too. After reading a very vague description of it on their site I really expected them to recreate the famous burial chamber of Nefertari of some kind. They put on display only copies of a couple of columns and the sarcophagus lid.

On a cross country trip from California to DC and needed somewhere to stop in the Kansas/Missouri area. Kansas City was a real find, and this museum was a highlight. Imagine if someone selected one or two fine exemplars of almost every important 19th and 20th century Western artist. That is the Nelson-Atkins. The museum is free but you do need timed-entry tickets, at least until the pandemic recedes.

The Nelson Atkins is a world class museum on par with other world class museums such as the Smithsonian, The British Museum, and even The Louvre. There is so much to see that one visit is not enough. The good thing about the Nelson Atkins is that it is free and you can also make reservations to visit either online or in person. Classic works of art from Egyptian to the present are on display. A classic museum that when in Kansas City one must visit.

The collection is really very good and the staff are polite and helpful. The outdoor sculpture garden is lovely, as well. A great place for a walk. I do worry, however, that many of the paintings and other pieces of art aren't well protected from the public, some of whom act as if they were born in barns. So, why only average? Because the museum pays most of its employees badly and is trying to prevent them from unionizing. What kind of good non-profit does that while paying the head of the museum a great deal? The union-busting attempts + Covid will probably keep me from visiting for awhile.

This is a really great museum! We spent an afternoon here while visiting KC. Lots of great art and very well organized (i.e., NOT chaotic like some art museums). Benches to sit and enjoy some of the pieces. Portable stools available to carry around so you can sit and enjoy any of the pieces. Super friendly and helpful docents. Museum is free, but underground parking (which I recommend) is $12. We spent most of our time at the Plaza level starting with ancient Egypt all the way through the twentieth century. Wish we could have spent more time to see it all.

This is such a phenomenal art museum, I had the most wonderful day here. Honestly ... WOW!!
Wonderful staff, friendly and welcoming. It's a jewel.
The only negative from my visit was I think the restaurant stopped servicing meals about 2pm on the day I was there, and I missed out on a good meal.
I spent the whole day here (until the late evening) and got absorbed in the wonderful exhibitions.
An Amazing place.

My fist trip to the N/A was 45 years ago.
I was blown away by the opportunity to spend an entire day with great works of art from masters I’d only read about in books. Every subsequent visit (this was luck #7) has been an adventure of new discovery combined with reverential returns to re-appreciate favorite works. I’m always impressed by the range of styles by Thomas Hart Benton in the American exhibit, many far removed from those definitive “that’s a Benton” works that are so recognizable.
The N/A itself is an amazing treasure housing a trove of treasures. It rivals any gallery in the U.S., and it’s hiding in plain sight on the east edge of KC’s famed Country Club Plaza.

My friends and I were there for 2.5 hours and we had barely made it through half of the museum. Of course we liked to take our time observing the art, but the museum is so big you will definitely be spending more than an hour here! There is so much beautiful art and the artwork is separated by culture and time period. Perfect thing to do on a weekend!

We only had time to see the Thomas Hart Benton paintings but we could see how extensive the collection was. I never imagined such a collection in Kansas City. If I had an opportunity to return I would plan to spend the day. The museum is free but parking in the underground garage, which is very convenient, is $12.00

Parking is underground and is super clean and convenient and you can walk directly into the modern art section from the lot, through sliding glass doors. You can also park on the street. You will see many parked cars on the street as you enter the underground parking. Parking underground is 7 dollars. On the street is popular, so you may or may not have to wait for a spot to open up. You can find parking on the street always, if you are willing to walk far enough.
