We invite you to visit this beautiful historic home in the heart of Billings, Montana. Our summer hours end on Labor Day and are 10am to 3pm. Regular (winter) hours are 1pm to 3pm. We are closed Mondays.

In 1903, entrepreneur Preston Boyd Moss (better known as "P.B.") built the Moss Mansion, greatly influencing the culture of Billings, Montana. Designed by New York architect, Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, designer of the original Waldorf Astoria and Plaza Hotels, the mansion showcases inspired architecture, unrivaled craftsmanship and exquisite decor.

The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has graced the silver screen on several occasions as the perfect site for period films such as Son of the Morning Star and Return to Lonesome Dove. Although the youngest daughter, Melville Moss, resided in the home until the mid-80's, the house and its original fixtures remain intact. Modern day visitors marvel at the home's amenities which include a call button system for the servants, among other impressive feats of technology for the period. The home not only records the activities of early Billings development but also interprets the inner workings of the family through letters shared among its members.

Today the mission of the Billings Preservation Society (the operating entity), symbolized by the Moss Mansion, is to inspire, to educate and to facilitate historic and cultural preservation activities for the community and for its future generations. The Moss Mansion welcomes thousands of visitors each year to enjoy a guided or group tour, explore the gardens and gift shop and experience a variety of signature community events. Many volunteers and a small staff are responsible for daily operations of the Moss Mansion.

The museum and gift shop are open Tuesday through Sunday - summer hours include daily guided tours that start on the hour from 10am to 3pm, regular hours (Sept through May) 1pm to 3pm. The beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens are free to the public and are also open year-round.

Great tour guide. House was built with the latest conveniences at the time. Grounds are nicely landscaped. Unusual things in the gift shop.

We only got to see the first floor because my husband cannot climb stairs and there is no elevator. What we saw was very impressive and beautiful.

Thank you, travelingrandmother, for your kind review and for taking the time to visit us with your husband. I hope you were able to view the images of the second floor, but we agree - it isn't like seeing it, walking it, and getting a sense of the space. Putting modern accessibility elements like lifts and elevators in the historic... More

Designed by the same architect as Grand Central Station in New York, each room has a different decorative style in carved hardwoods, cloth wall coverings, and most unusually it was owned for the century before it became a historic home by a single family so the furniture, art, dishes, lights, etc. are original (they died out mostly by the second... Sure glad you had a great time jodsmcd! Halloween is fun, but you'll enjoy a regular tour in a whole different way. Halloween and Christmas are special presentations that really bring out the festive traditions, so those times are year tours are definitely influenced by them. We hope you are able to enjoy them all! Thank you for visiting. More

This is one of the first mansions built in Billings, the history is amazing, while P.B. Moss was a large influence in most of Billings, businesses at the turn of the 1900's. This is a beautifully maintained area, which holds a great deal of history of the early years in downtown billings.

Moss Mansion was offering a free tour day, so my hubby and I decided to take advantage. I've toured many historical homes before but none quite so fantastic and beautiful as this one. Because it was a free day, there were no individual tour guides (there were a few folks present to ask questions from) but even the self guided... More

What a wonderful review and rating, Frannie R! Thanks so much for describing your experience here. We do become pretty 'haunted' at Halloween and will be happy to have you visit again. The Moss is a beautiful view back to the the early years of Billings. Fantastic history from the perspective of a lovely family home. From the grand entrance to the sequestered Butler's staircase the home is a must see!! Wonderful stories weave the historical stories into entertainment for all ages. Also the gardens are gorgeous and the little gift shop... More

The house has come down largely complete and very little changed from as built and full of beautiful arabic and asian motifs showing the interests of the times and significant wealth of the builders. Tours are well led and informative

We appreciate your kind review and insight, James T. Though we are very dedicated to keeping the mansion in top condition, the Moss family deserves the credit for the integrity and longevity of this great building and all of it's contents. It was not ever an easy task for them to maintain even ownership of the home, as any homeowner... More
