Worth taking a side trip to see a major geological tragedy - 60 years later. Big earthquake brought the side of a massive rock mountain on top of a summer campground / blocking a significant river and creating a new lake. Army Corps raced to...More

Just comes across this place as we were driving from Glacier a few years ago. We decided to visit again this visit. It was closed for the season but if you know the story you can see everything you need to see.

Nice stop off, although turn-offs are the only option to stop and view the lake. It was a cloudy day and a pretty eerie scene (end of season too, so v quiet!!) - worth weaving into your route and the signs they have put up...More

Although the tale of Earth Quake late is a sad one, it is educational none the less. Thankfully it's not an often repeated one. I found it eerie and haunting even from the roadway.

We stubbled across lake leaving Yellowstone on way to Ennis. The lake had lots of boats with people fishing. I wish I had more time to stop and explore the area.

When visiting Yellowstone try to find time for a drive along Highway 287 and the Hebgen and Earthquake Lakes. Various interpretive boards and short trails tell the story of the fateful night in 1959 when an earthquake caused a massive landslide which blocked the Madison...More

My husband wanted to visit after being there decades ago. I was doubtful, but oh boy, so glad we took the drive. The magnitude of the event and the beauty that resulted from disaster and sorrow are mind blowing. I highly recommend.

It is pet friendly, almost no grass for your pet and no shade at visitor center.
