The "Ochiul Beiului" lake - a small little "emerald" gem in the mountains of Banat, close by to Sasca Montana - there is a hiking trail from the village .
We did not make the hike from Sasca - we've arrived by car taking the forest road that ends at the trout farm in the forest and there we parked - from there we took the trail through the woods to the lake - from the trout farm you have like a 30 minutes hike to the lake.
The lake was formed in karstic crater , it has a spring that supplies it with water - less than 300 squared meters in surface , with a max depth of 3.5 meters (there have been cases when some people took a bath in the pristine waters of the lake) - with a no swimming sign on the shore.
Now the hike through the woods is easy , no steep portions to mitigate, even if you are not perfectly fit , you can do the hike easily....
Once at the lake - you can stop for a few minutes , take some pics, it is truly beautiful. (And visiting the lake is free of charge - you pay a fee at the "tunnels" for entering with the car on the premises - but once at the trout farm , you can hike without issue) .

This crystal-blue lake is probably the best-known attraction of the whole Cheile Nerei - Beușnița National Park and for a good reason. Even though you can find several small, very clear blue lakes scattered all around the park, Ochiul Beiului (The Bey's Eye) is by far the most special and the most beautiful.
Besides its colour, it is well known also for not freezing in the winter and for its legend. It is said that hundreds of years ago the son of a bey (a ruler of the reigon) fell in love with the daughter of a shepherd. The bey disapproved of this and ordered the girl to be killed. His son cried so much that, from his tears, this lake emerged, it being also the spot where he decided to end his life.
The hike up to Ochiul Beiului is quite easy and not the most spectacular in the whole Cheile Nerei - Beușnița National Park, but still nice. You have 2 options:
1. Park at Podul Bei, where the paved road ends. From there, you will have a hike along an unpaved car road that will take you around 1 hour and 15 minutes until you reach the "Valea Bei" trout restaurant and fishery. From there, you will walk for about 45 minutes on a hiking trail (but an easy one) until you reach the lake. So, in total, a 2 hours walk or so. Alternatively, you can start from Sasca Română village and reach Podul Bei not by car, but by foot, via "La Tuneluri" hiking path, a great 1-hour long walk through carved tunnels.
2. Drive up to Podul Bei and then drive further on the dirt road up to the "Valea Bei" trout restaurant and fishery, where there are parking spots (and camping spots as well). Then you'll have a 45 minutes walk to the Ochiul Beiului lake.
I advise you to take the first option, partly because the road is not going to do any good to your car and you will end up not saving that much time, as you have to drive really slow. Mainly, however, because the walk is along the river and you have many nice landscapes to see. Be sure to stop at the La Văioaga Waterfall! Also, the only toilets you will find on this road are at the restaurant.
Must-see if you go to this national park!

When I have time I take a weekend to revisit this place for the last 10 years.
Beautiful area, beautiful carstic lake.
At the beginning of the trail near the camping site there is a fresh fish farm and a small restaurant which serves fresh grilled trout.
30-40 walk to Ochiul Bei and another 20 to Beusnita waterfalls.
Nights in the camping area are so chill there.
Small mountain river with trout running by, great for a morning/afternoon refresh.
Great for running away from the city heat.

After admiring the beautiful and strange turquoise poll of water, cross the river and continue on the trail for another 20 minutes to Beusnita Waterfall. You won't be disappointed. Beautiful, easy, short hike (mind the mud if wet) to a 12 m high waterfall. The rushing waters of Nera River on the way is an added bonus.

The trail is wide and easy to follow. The trail to the lake is about 45 minutes. The water generally acquires a turquoise color.

This lake is an amazing one in the middle of the forest, being the birth place of Bei River. Being sourced into an underground spring, this lake never freezes and it has a great turquoise color due to the combination between white limestone and green leaves.

This small lake has some of the amazing blue/green colors I have ever seen. With some imagination and good eye, a photographer might take amazing photos. The walk to Ochiul Bei is an easy path and we had the luck to be accompanied by a new breed of dogs, the touristic dog! A playful dog accompanied us from the beginning to the end , both way , being rewarded with a part of our sandwich.

I love this lake. It's small, but has such amazing colours. And it's easily accesible - needs a bit of walking to get to it, but no difficulties (good for all ages).

Como se puede llegar allí si estás en el centro de Rumanía? Cuál es la ciudad más cercana? Vale la pena tomar un viaje largo para visitar este parque por dos dias?
