Our campground was surrounded by the Lake Ogallala. My wife and I took a stroll. Some did swim. Others had their tents near the lake. The best view of Lake Ogallala is from the road. When we left the campground and we were driving, we...More

Fishing here is not that good. All small fish. You can camp in the campground, that is well shaded. Or you can boon dock camp on the other side of the lake. First come, first serve.

I got there a bit late in the evening so most of the birds had settled down. No eagles for me. But I got a nice walk out of it and explored a bit.

Probably 15-20 bald eagles and hundreds of mergansers. A wonderful spot! Go in the late afternoon for the evening sunlight.

The enclosed observation center at the hydro dam is a fantastic place for eagle watching. Is it -8F outside? No worries, it’s warm inside. The staff set up telescopes and binoculars to make viewing easier. The wildlife expert gave an informative lecture (thanks, Allison!). The...More

Due to many drought years on Lake McConaughy above the lake there is a lot of decayed vegetation on bottom of the lake. Thus when they let water out the dam the smell is overpowering. Nice campground but stench is tough to handle.

The Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala area is a true gem of the midwest. You'll find miles of sandy shaded beaches--unexpected in Nebraska. However, our neighbors in the Lake Ogallala campground were the rudest and most misbehaved group of campers I've ever encountered. They would...More

Sometimes, being 2nd is a good thing, and Lake O is definitely the 2nd fiddle to Lake Mac, which is adjacent. But when the wind or sun or bugs are just tooooo much up top, there's relative serenity down below the dam. Nice camping, can...More
