Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This spot on Tahoe has ahhhmazing breathtaking views, dog friendly beach access for everyone and is truly a hike to a hidden gem that you won't soon forget!! Skunk Harbor not only combines all of these wonderful attributes but also throws in a bit of history for you to check out too!
Parking is FREE but limited, located at a turnoff along HWY 28 about a few miles north of the Spooner/HWY 50 junction - look for an old green pipe gate which is also the entrance to the trailhead (do NOT park in front of gate, you WILL be fined). After you park, grab your gear (keep in mind there are NO facilities - take out what you take in). Travel along the old dirt road on the other side of the green gate through the Tahoe forest. When you reach the fork in the road you have 2 choices: left fork leads to Prey Meadows which is blanketed with many varieties of wildflowers in the spring anddd right fork leads you to Skunk Harbor.
Throughout your hike down to Skunk Harbor take in the breathtaking picture worthy views all around. Upon your arrival to the beach be sure to find the historical remants of an old railroad ramp used to supply timber to Virginia City after the Comstock Lode plus an abandoned stone house along the waters edge with historical markers from the 1920s that belonged to the wealthy family of George Newhall built as a summer house here for vacations and parties. Everything was brought in by boat, during the Roaring Twenties ~ WOW!!
This is a MUST DO!! Hike is roughly 3 miles round trip, I always enjoy an adventure / hike with a reward at the end, Skunk Harbor not only has this throughout but pays off at the end. Be prepared for a bit of workout on the way back out as it is uphill and can be exposed depending on time and season/weather. So bring plenty of H20 and take your time but this hidden gem is worth it!!

Park on side of Highway 28. Hike down to the lake for gorgeous views, photographs and flowers. Historic stone building at lakeside. Enjoy a picnic before you hike uphill. Approximately 2 hours for tourists.

In 15 years of boating this is the best cove and beach I've ever found. The sand is grainy but clean. The views are unequaled. I can't say enough about the serenity and beauty of this spot. We were there on a quiet day, I'm sure on a weekend it can get packed but it's a hike from the road so maybe not too bad. We boated in and anchored. Great hiking from the spot too.

Park on the side of Highway 28 by the green gate. Pack a picnic lunch and head down the trail to the lake for gorgeous views and crystal clear water. When you get to the lake, keep walking around to the right and find a spot on the rocks to enjoy the views. We had fun jumping off the rocks into the water. Save some energy for the hike back up the trail.

A somewhat long and sometimes street walk from the highway. Very private beach that is very clean. Be observant as there are some times nudes and you might be offended

Take highway 28 from highway 50 North approx 2 miles. Look for iron pope gate in west side of highway. Park in one of the turnouts along the highway. A great walk through a mixed conifer forest with filtered views of Lake Tahoe along the way. When you reach a fork in the road go left for Prey Meadows and right for Skunk Harbour. Very picturesque with great swimming and sunbathing in the summer. A good 1.5 mile easy sandy trail but remember what goes down must come up! Allow 45 mins for stops and photos! Breath catching on way up! Beautiful! Will do it again!

Its best to visit in the morning before the noisy boaters and the rest of the hikers start to trickle in. Vivid green and blue harbor that's hidden away enough for quiet reflection but not too far to hike, a rarity for any natural beauty. The hike is from the main road and will only take 30 minutes as its all downhill, a bit more of challenge on the way back up. While not a difficult hike it would be challenging for those out of shape at the elevation. The old building is interesting but no facilities for RR or fresh water. Be sure to bring plenty of your own.

The beach and old pavilion/party house are great and can keep you entertained for a few hours at least. It's relatively quiet in October when we've been; 2 times in 5 years. It's a great view and you can see cool critters and plants at the beach and during the hike. Hardest part is the parking, as there's little of it and one pull off requires walking along the road for a bit. The hike out is definitely the workout part of the hike with a pretty good gain in elevation. The trail is easy as it's mostly a sand/granite forest road.

Does anyone know about the yellow jackets on Skunk Harbor? Any specific times to avoid them?
