Rainbow Ridge is hands down the best opal mine to dig. The owners Glen and Donna are very helpful. Every year we find many unique and absolutely stunning opals! This is our 9th year and look forward to returning every season!!

My wife and I traveled with another couple from Klamath Falls Oregon to camp in our travel trailers at Virgin Valley Nevada hot spring. What an amazing place! First of all it's free and they have potable water on site so no need to haul your trailer up Doherty Slide full of water. There are several opal and sun stone mines nearby and the hot springs are perfectly relaxing. It has a continuosly running shower house which was clean and private. Our camp sites were nice and clean and well spaced with plenty of room for much larger RV's so we had no trouble setting ours exactly where we wanted. It also has several vault toilets that were very clean and tidy. We are definitely planning to go back when the desert cools down abit. Over all we all totally loved it. Can't wait to go back. Well worth the drive!

It is an awesome place. Have been there for several years. Some times you find big and sometimes you don't. Tailings have already been gone thru. Still some that have been missed. Virgin load is the way to go. Great place.

You'll take a pretty long drive down a gravel road to get to the opal mines, including Rainbow Ridge. Rainbow Ridge is well developed with a gift shop, etc. There are others out there that are not as developed and you should visit, too. Check out Opal Negra and talk to Scott there. He's really interesting and wants to teach, which is great for kids and adults alike. And Scott won't let you leave without taking a little something with you. He'll teach you how opals are formed in petrified wood. But...back to the gravel (more like 1" road base) road. As we were buying 4 brand new tires in Lakeview the next day, the young man there told us that for whatever reason, this road had been built with some pretty sharp large gravel. The last thing they told us when we left the shop was to be sure to take it slow on the gravel roads. They also told us that the highway patrol says the largest number of calls they get are from people who had 2 blowouts and 1 spare tire. So take it easy! ;-)
