- MichelleMcDonough, Georgia19 contributionsNice to visitSo it was nice to see some of the older casinos and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Strip, but the area reeks of marijuana. That was a major turn off and made us leave pretty quickly. We will try again but maybe earlier in the day versus around 3 p.m.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 March 2024
- Theo VAmsterdam, The Netherlands1,557 contributionsNice to do.Good fun to go downtown. Exceptional noise levels in Fremont street. Great fun looking at people. Rest of downtown nice to walk through. Of course looking at the well known shop. Bit of a walk from Fremont, but doable.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024
- TravelingSoccerLoonSaint Paul, Minnesota5,872 contributionsLouder and Grittier than The Strip but Offering an Entertaining ExperienceDowntown Las Vegas is very different from the glamour and sophistication of The Strip. It is a grittier experience. It can be loud and filled with a younger crowd and you will encounter some interesting characters, but it makes for a fun time and is worth experiencing when in Vegas. Much energy was brought back to Downtown when the Fremont Experience opened. The Fremont East District adjacent is also worth exploring. It is a more laid-back area with bars, restaurants, comedy clubs and music venues. However, Downtown Las Vegas is also considered by many the "real Vegas". More no non-sense than The Strip. Hotels are more affordable, drinks are less expensive and table minimums at the casinos are less than The Strip.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 April 2024

Recently revisited The golden Nugget downtown for a four night stay. We always liked staying downtown to visit Fremont st at night to listen to music and artist along the street. What we found was incredibly high prices for both food and beverages along with disgusting drug and homeless filling the streets. The casinos no longer have food specials and if you want a beer save your gambling money. The smell of weed and something so disgusting it smells like skunk reeks up and down the street. Druggies running around rudely begging for drug or beer money and you really don’t know who’s homeless and who isn’t as it’s a fad to fake it and beg for money. Gambling is not the same anymore and payouts rare. Casinos are pricing themselves out of the middle class and in general do not make you feel welcomed anymore. Our experience was shared with others and feelings are mutual. We will be spending our money in the Caribbean from now on at an all inclusive from now on. The hotel staff the few we did encounter did not seem as friendly either and that was disappointing.

Oh, this place is like a horrible, nasty, booze laden, deep fried glob of a mess. Stinks, people are high, high and drunk. If you like flying high with atrocious noise and watching humans getting close to acting like zombies then this circus is for you! But please do not take your kids unless you want them high from the marijuana smoking right in front of you.

The preparation for the Formula One has ruined the downtown experience. Roads are blocked, Traffic is horrible, bleachers, high end, booths for the Richie, rich to watch the race are block views from hotels, water fountains, etc. Some elevators and escalators are not working, which make it more difficult for individuals with walking issues. This is not a good thing for tourists to visit from October through November. This will continue for the next 10 years during the month of October and November. You will not get your moneys worth downtown during this time.

Downtown Vegas by Fremont where the original casinos started! Bars, gambling, food, and a ton of people. It was fun drive so looking all the little wedding chapels and art. I do love seeing the neon lights. That about it for downtown Vegas.
It has a lot of drunks, ton of pot smoking and weird. Smoke actually made us all sick so we left after 40 mins. The darker it got the crazy it got too! But if that is your thing go enjoy and the time of your life:)

The only two highlights I wanted to see was the Fremont Street Experience and the Pawn Stars shop. Lots of sights for the senses. You also will see the multiple small wedding chapels Vegas is known for. I ended up feeling grateful I decided to tour around during the day. I felt there was a high number of panhandlers and other people that make you slightly consider your safety. I imagine this would become more pronounced after dark. The older casinos were fun to enter and look around. There were a good number of lower limit table games available here. This is truly a slice of Vegas you will not get on the lower Strip.

The new vision screen they have is great but if you are listening to the bands be prepared to be over run by homeless people. They probably don't mean harm but they dance around you and bump into you nonstop. There is lots a solicitation for money even using young children now for it. Lots of security.

Las Vegas is known for many things including the casinos featured in different movies, the skyline and how it's next to the dessert. But in my opinion, the sign you see when entering Las Vegas is the most well known thing about Las Vegas. Here in Downtown Las Vegas their is a mini Paris, Venice, Egypt Pyramid and even a Disney hotel. Las Vegas isn't a recommended place at night for children due to inappropriate dancing and gambling. Though the dessert outside of Vegas is a must see. Also with young children, exploring the different hotels is an amazing thing to do to kill time.

With the exception of Fremont street downtown is dirty and full of homeless. Park as close as you can to Fremont at night. We parked in the Carson lot $3 for the first hour $2 every hour after, max $13 for the day.

The Fremont Street experience is fun! There is a light show on the canopy that features a lot of old time Nintendo characters. Also this is the way I remember Las Vegas the very first time I went there. Still Glitzy.

To any all of you that are coming to Las Vegas. You have to pay for parking both on the strip and downtown. Once you check into your hotel on the strip or downtown. it's better that you call for a car service to come and get you to take you to where you wish to go. Make sure that you check with your hotel to see if you get a price break for parking your car at the hotel that you are staying in. You will be doing a lot of walking on the strip , stay safe , have fun, drink lots of water , WELCOME TO LAS VEGAS. !

My wife and I are going to Vegas in March - this will be our first time - do you have any tips about where we can save money i.e train tickets bus tickets etc. we are 69 and 65 so we do want to have a good time but we want to spend money on nice meals etc. Also is it better for us to book a show when we arrive in Vegas or book direct with Caesars Palace on line? Any good tips you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

I am always on the look out for great deals, and the one's we found were mostly on GROUPON. The HINT here is, LOG ON or into GROUPON, set Las Vegas as your home city and then refresh the page so local deals are listed, and KaPoW! The best prices on the Best of entertainment and Food establishments are listed for you to pick from. This should be done months in advance to your trip as the deals change, discounts deepen as time passes, HINT if you like something click on it and hit Buy it, get to the summery page and then log in Discount or Promo codes, if you still do not like the price, Back Out of the page and log out, it cost nothing and in the days to follow GROUPON will send you emails asking if you are still interested in the item and offer a further discount at times! A lot of items we clicked on and checked out we save those GROUPON EMAILS and when a 20% or 30% off sale runs, I pull out the emails on the items I was watching and see it the code applies to the items I want, if and when it does, you can receive 30% of an already 50%-80% off reduced item! Now that’s Vacation planning at it’s best right there! The tours we took, the restaurants we ate at every second day were All GROUPON PURCHASES I researched before we ever got there, making sure they we accessible to our location without to much cost(Most of ours we selected to buy were in walking distance f our hotel or a short ride on the Deuce and short walk, and we ended up making mini day trips out of them, finding our hidden gems! It was a great way to enjoy the best Las Vegas had to offer, and not pay retail for most of it! As far a concert tickets, I bought on Holiday sales prior to Leaving to plan the times and locations for the Anchor Events, IE JayLo and Maria Carey Concerts were my wife’s Dream Concerts so I booked them inside our travel dates evenly spaced out during our time. Black Friday Specials through Ticket Master was where I bought both sets of tickets & over 2 months in advance. Both were sale prices, saving on average of $100.00 a set each purchase. Search tickets out on the internet, as the tickets are sold by multiple dealers as Caesar’s sell tickets to VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Ticket Master etc. And they each run sales at times, checking around paid off for us as we saw 4 concerts, went on three tours including the Grand canyon, Pawn Stars, Counts Customs, TANKED, Ricki’s Restorations, had lots of money to enjoy a day at Las Vegas Speedway driving a Lambo, F1 Porsche and an AUDI R8 also a GROUPON Purchase! I can confidently say we saved over $2,000.00 off Retail Tourist prices on our 2 weeks we spent there, for sure! Glad to help, have a great trip!

I will visit mid March.Where can coupon books be purchased?
Written 27 February 2016
You can get coupons online for the shops, but sometimes it worth going into the shops to see what discount they are offering. Some say text this number to get a code, I did this and never got a reply but show the cashier that I had text to get the discount. Other coupons are available on the strip as advised by other replies. Have a great holiday

are there any condos that rent for vacation in the downtown Vegas? We loved renting a condo on the strip vs a hotel room and would like to do the same near the downtown area instead of the Golden Nugget

I am going to be traveling alone to Vegas and staying at the American Grand downtown. I have only ever staying along the strip (and with other people) and was wondering if those that have been there would consider this a safe area to walk around Freemont, container garden, mob museum etc. by myself. I am not unaware of the "characters" that frequent vegas and am a 39 year-old confident/smart traveler. I just wanted to get your thoughts and also recommendations of things to do and see when I am there.
Thanks,
Amanda
Written 11 May 2015
I too would consider myself a smart confident traveler. I have stayed both on the strip and downtown.
I would be most "aware" during the walk between Freemont and the downtown grand. It's only about 2 blocks but not many tourists. That's not to say it's not safe... I'd just say don't let your guard down there.
The container Park area has great promise but when I was there last it was more a kids playground than anything else with a food court... Great concept that needs some tweaking.
I highly recommend the neon museum, and nightlife at The golden nugget. If you gamble there are some great options downtown.
Main Street Station has a nice microbrewery, excellent food options at the nugget (and a starbucks) and the open air shows on Freemont are heating up very soon.
There is an art walk area that I've always wanted to do near downtown a few blocks South...
Have fun!
Glenn

Fremont street is a great place to gamble, there are so many to choose from and do not buy drinks, once seated either at the machines or tables a waitress will bring you whatever you ask for as far as drinks are concerned, just give her a couple of dollars each time, far cheaper than buying and one last thing, visit at night for the overhead light show and February will not be too busy, enjoy yourselves in Fremont street then enjoy the strip.
