Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Skip this place if you can. The drive from Reno to VC is the only thing worth the time. The city itself is just a tourist trap that really doesn't provide much unless you like being considered a walking wallet. The old western architecture is nice but they have turned it into a Disney-like theme park including locals dressed up as old west characters. Not worth the time.

As people who love ghost towns and old western towns, we were so excited to spend the day in Virginia City. Such a disappointment. It was so off putting and unwelcoming that we left after about an hour of strolling around, without spending a dime there. Avoid this place. It’s rundown in so many unpleasant ways.

Avoid this town at all costs. The cops are all over the place giving out hundreds of parking tickets in areas not marked well. These are not cheap tickets!!! $195!! The lady at the court agreed it was a racket and that they were getting hundreds of complaints. She said they just recently raised the cost of parking tickets to $195 which is absolute ridiculous! There were a dozen cars with parking tickets one road over from the main road. They were also pulling over every car coming into town who didn't see the speed limit had dropped to 20mph long before you entered the town. We clearly got the sense this was purely a money making thing for the town. Praying on tourists from other states who don't know the area that well. I won't ever go back to Virginia City unless I hear this BS has stopped.

The knowledgeable person at the historic counter will give you a helpful map and will let you know what is open on that particular day and what attractions are free. He/she will advise you on choices based on the size of your group and interests. They also have public restrooms.

To begin with it said on the Internet the town opened at 9 o’clock it opens somewhere between 11 and 12 so you just have to sit on a bench until the shop owners decide they want to open the door. And then there’s some crazy woman walking the streets with a black and white dog tied to her waist sniffing peoples crutches and if you say something she starts screaming they’re kicking my dog they’re kicking my dog. I don’t know what has happened but in the last 10 years Virginia City has went straight to hell

Want to take some tours or ride the train in Virginia City? This is the place to start. You can get a package deal or set up your own must-see tours. Take some Cemetery Gin home and a bottle of Virginia City Cab or Chardonnay. Everyone here is super knowledgeable too.

It is so fun going to Virginia City! There are cute little shops that take you back to the good old days when things were simple, fun, and not so expensive. However, politics are woven in to just about everything there, and if you aren't a Donald Trump lover, and would love nothing more than getting away from all of that, it could rub you wrong to visit there (like when you walk in and see Biden toilet paper for sale, and also, the guy at the door points it out 🙄). It is also a city with not much diversity, which is kind of weird.

Very helpful...when they're open. They're not always open during their posted hours. But when someone was there, we got excellent help and advice along with an excellent town map showing which attractions would be open/closed each day.

It costs to see almost everything in Virginia City, but it is possible to knock 50 cents off every individual fee by purchasing a ticket ahead of time at the Visitor Center. There are packaged deals, but we preferred to choose our own itinerary, which was also possible. We told the clerk each place we wanted to visit & received a ticket/receipt listing them all, which we presented at each location, at which time that particular attraction was crossed off.
We only selected 3 and were dismayed that we nearly ran out of time to visit them all, since most of these attractions are not open after 4 or 5 pm and we only had 1 afternoon to spend in Virginia City.
The Visitor Center itself is in a beautiful room. The silver worked ceiling & the rich red wallpaper were amazing. The building used to be something else, maybe a saloon, but we forget now what the clerk said.

What time do stores and saloons start opening Monday thru Friday?

Mark, why did you give the visitor center the worst possible rating when you didn't even visit it and otherwise thought highly of the city?

We also stopped at the Visitor Center, and they were very pleasant and helpful, as was everyone we encountered in town. It was a totally pleasant experience.
