Not much better than a free ferry ride to the quaint island of Ocracoke. It's a bit of a trip, 1 hr boat ride, and during the summer the wait on either side can be 1 hr or more on top of that. But its...More

The wait times during peak summer season to get from Hatteras to Ocracoke are laughable. We sat perfectly still for over an hour on a Thursday afternoon for over an hour. Finally gave up and just went to the beach at Hatteras. When you can...More

My wife and I have ridden the NC ferry system on multiple occasions from Hatteras to Ocracoke and Ocracoke to Cedar Island and back. Love being on the water and taking the time to enjoy the scenery, especially on the Cedar Island trips at dusk...More

We drove about 90 minutes from Nags Head to take this free ferry across to Ocracoke Island on Hwy 12. Both ways we were lucky to only have to wait a few minutes to board the ferry and sat in our car for the 1...More

Caught the 5:00 am ferry from Hatteras to then catch the 7:30 am ferry to Cedar Island. Never taking a ferry before, we were not sure what to expect, especially since we were traveling with our four young children. The experience exceeded our expectations. Everything...More

After spending 3 days in the main part of the Outer Banks, we wanted to see Ocracoke and then head back home through New Bern. So instead of a longer car ride, we took the free ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke and then the ferry...More

We really enjoyed the free ferry rides to and from ocracoke. The men who run it are organized and knowledgeable. The lines aren’t too bad if you arrive in the morning. There are shops to waste time in right next to where you line up...More

Great experience. It is a free ferry. MAKE SURE you get there early, or you WILL HAVE to wait in a long line for the next one, or even miss that one if you have a long line in front of you. It is a...More

Great ferry ride, trip to Ocracoke is free. Trip took about an hour one way. There are bathrooms on the ferry, and also a viewing deck up top. Certain times of the day can get very busy, but there are some shops near by if...More

I love the NC ferry, being able to go from island to island by ferry, with our car is absolutely wonderful. The ferry system is smooth and very organized. I use it when ever I am at the Outer Banks.

I actually counted the cars on the ferry trips we took. It seems that 20 - 25 was the number. I also think weight comes into play as one time there was room for more cars and they didn't allow them to board.

Unfortunately, you need to have a vehicle. But, if you have one already, the ferry takes it too. You just drive right on up the ramp.
