There are many historic house museums to tour in this area, but this was not just your average colonial. Our knowledgeable tour guide explained the Moffatt-Ladd family story and gave us informative facts about the home. We had a small, friendly tour group and it was a relaxed environment. The tour guide was ready as soon as we arrived, and... More

This lovely Georgian house was home to three families right at the centre of it all. It's a fascinating story and the tour was comprehensive. The gardens are a delight and worth a stroll.

If you are a history buff, you have done the right thing by visiting Portsmouth. The Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden offers an in-depth tour of both the house and garden and the stories behind the actual building make you view it as even more amazing than it is on first glance. It is a block from the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside... More

The docent was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed her talk. We didn't know that Portsmouth played such an important role. The family history highlights the role of slavery and inequality of men and women at the time. The architectural elements are fascinating. Well worth the $7 entrance fee.

We stopped in to visit simply because we know some folks named Ladd, but ended up getting a first-class lesson in early family life in Portsmouth, complete with all the warts as well as the wonders. It was very easy to follow the inhabitants through generations full of triumphs and tragedies, and the many historic portraits brought everyone into sharp... More

I love museums of this sort and visit them whenever possible. The place is lovely; the staff is not. You work at this museum people, you are not yourselves Queen of the manor. Eat some humble pie.

Our tour guide was knowledgeable and engaging. She regaled us with family stories about the different generations of the Moffatt family and descendants. She also provided a lot of details about the architecture and furnishings in the house. The terraced gardens, which were designed and planted by Alexander Hamilton Ladd, the last family member to live there, are just as... More
