My first introduction to real hiking, and had I known what was involved, I would have missed it :) If you're used to strolls in the park, flat gravel paths and occasional elevation changes through gentle woodland, this will be a surprise. A friend's daughter suggested it, and never mentioned that it was a hand over hand vertical scramble straight up (the Red Dot trail). I had a backpack with about 12 pounds of food, water, camera gear, etc., so that made it a even more challenging. It took about 90 minutes to climb up, and the trail was very crowded due to a 60 degree day in December. We spent about half an hour at the top, then came down the Blue Dot trail, which was much less steep but still difficult. It was just as rocky and root strewn as the way up, and muddy from recent rain. If you're naturally clumsy - I am - than it will be another hour to get down, walking very carefully. Yes, some people ran down the trail like deer, others went slowly and carefully. Once closer to the bottom, it was much more level with normal size rocks and roots, but you still had to watch where you put your feet. There was some black ice on the path near the river, and I saw someone's feet fly out from under them. No, not mine, but it can happen to anyone, any age, any condition. This hike really spiked my interest in more hiking, just not mountain climbing :) Get there early if it's a weekend or nice weather, the parking lots fill quickly. There are porta potties in both lots. And there is a short stretch where you're actually on the Appalachian Trail, definitely a bonus.

I have been to Mt. Tammany for numerous times and the last one was for sunset. Being somewhat disappointed as the sun refused to come out of clouds for more than an hour, I started putting stuffs back to backpack, about to leave. Then all of sudden, everything surrounding me became shed with this rosy light. That was one of the magic moments that you couldn't plan for. Instead they came to you, entirely unexpected but very pleasantly. Of course this was the most beautiful sunset I have seen in a long time.

With a lovely November day forecasted we decided to hike this spot and boy we were reward with a spectacular view. It took about an hour to get to the top from the first parking lot off 80. We took the white blaze red dot trail to the top. Then turned left on to blue blaze trail back. Total miles was like 5 miles and took about 3 hours with kids. The first mile and half was strenuous and mostly up hill once on the blue is relatively flat and down hill. Real nice river walk on the blue trail back to the parking lot. Great little hike to get the heart rate up.

More of a climb than a hike. Don't, don't go on a weekend. You seen those pix of a bunch of guys lined up at the peak of Mt. Everest? Don't go on a weekend.

I'd like to see it again in the fall. It was nice in the summer but the heat made the hike even more intense. If I could do it again I'd bring a lot more water and invest in some hiking boots. I wore sneakers and my feet got a little beat up.
