Agriculture and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories.

Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years.

Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and a cherished wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food.

Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages.

Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.

Absolutely fantastic location and this is our third picnic. The setting for picnics is out of this world and the food and everything about it is excellent. Just lounging around the gardens and different shops is relaxing and yet the attention to detail is always apparent. Will definitely be back!!

As ex-South Africans who last went to Boschendal when it was THE vineyard picnic 20 years ago, we took some friends from New Zealand along. The picnic areas are divided into the Rhone and Werff areas, the former offering tables and the latter requiring you to bring a blanket and picnic under the trees and is slightly cheaper. In both... It's been about 8 years since our last visit and we went wine tasting first followed by the picnic at Rhone. The tasting was just fine and not rushed as quite a few tourists there, but unfortunately the new location for the picnic is nowhere as nice as our previous visit which I think is called werf area now.the standard... We only stopped by for a quick wine tasting. The estate is very big, has lovely gardens. A nice restaurant but also picnic options on the lawns. Childfriendly with a water splash area and horse riding for small children. The wine tasting was nice, our waiter knew a lot and was very informative. The Premium wines were well above average... Perhaps if you are new to Boschendal and on the tourist trail, this would be just fine. I think it has, in the process of being re-invented, become too commercialised, just as with Spier. No-one advised us they had shifted the location, the hamper was no-where near up to the standard of the past, although the service was willing and... More

We celebrated Christmas Day at Boschendal - a picnic under the big beautiful oak trees. We were a large group - 50 in total. Family from USA, Australia & SA. We chartered a bus from Rondebosch, Cape Town and the ride was just over an hour. The staff had tables and chairs all set up under the trees. Tables had all... More

We have been here in the past for winetasting and we were so impressed that we came back just to sit and soak up the ambience and have a drink of their fantastic bubbly. We went at the end of the day and we were nearly the only people there, it had been a busy day and we were served... More

It was so totally romantic, the food was great, the wine was even better and the service was superb. I cannot recommend this experience enough.

We had booked the Rhone picnic for New Year's Day ad weren't disappointed! The hamper was bursting with delicious local goodies and the wine was great too. The setting under the big oak trees was beautiful and shady. Our only disappointment was that we couldn't do any wine tasting at that site and would have needed to go to the... More
