This is an amazing trip to do, and whether you are local or foreign you will have a great day out. If you are from CT you may never have thought to come to Hout Bay for a whale trip, but you will not be disappointed. If you are a visitors - the day out is spectacular, and it is well worth coming out to HB for all the other fun things to do (beers in the sun at dunes, a dip at the beach which is a delight, and number of amazing restaurants...). I found the guides very knowledgeable about whales and sea life but also about other topics - Brent also does guided tours in the mountains if you are looking for a knowledgeable guide on (nature and culture) to keep you safe along the local coastline and mountains (you need a guide in parts). We saw lots of whales and sat and watched them for some time, as well as penguins, sun fish, and seals at the island. We were a few only on the boat and you will be very lucky wither way - it is quite small, open, good viewing. And you might be lucky to have some local marine life experts on board with you too. Of course, whales is luck of the draw - but the view of the coastline from the boat is pretty awesome too. I have had guests go out and not see whales (not for lack of trying on Captain Jack's part) who nonetheless had a lovely day and enjoyed the views of the mountains and the town and noordhoek/kommetjie from the boat. I was lucky that we had whales galore! Really worth the excursion, even if you don't love boats (I get sea sick but the whales do make it worth it...)

You always read that the whale season around Kaapstad is in wintertime. The guide Brent Thomas explained that there are whales all year round. So I joined a group and we set of to sea in the rubberboat. That was already a great experience but to be at sea and then meet these incredible creatures was a dream come true. We ran into a group of humpbacks, they were so close but respecting the whales. Brent knew so much about the animals. And later we set of the seal island which was a 'great dessert'.

We had a wonderful boat trip this morning. We saw many whales and seals and were overwhelmed. The crew was super friendly and did everything to make our tour perfect. Thanks again. We are still super happy!! Then although we were already out for more than two hours we did not finish the tour in a rush and got some time for more pics as well.

This 5 star rating is more for the company than the activity. Only 2 of us signed up for the whale watching trip, which they still ran – with two crew employees. I think many companies would have cancelled. The crew members were both very nice and enthusiastic; we felt like they really wanted us to see whales, and they were as excited about them as we were. While we did see a few whales, if you’ve been on a whale watching trip in Alaska or some other place where the whales are practically jumping into the boat, this experience was not that. However, we still enjoyed it, and really enjoyed seeing and understanding the whale footprint. We also saw lots of birds (albatross!) and they took us over to the seal colony, too. It was supposed to be 2 hours, and it went 2.5 hours. The boat moves fast and it’s quite chilly – was glad I had my windbreaker on and light gloves. It’s very bouncy, so if you are prone to motion sickness, plan accordingly. We did get splashed, but would not say overall that we were wet. The seats are between your legs and you grip with your thighs – could be challenging for a mobility impaired person expecting to sit on a bench. Hout’s Bay is very scenic.
