About
Altit Fort, located in the Hunza Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is a historic architectural gem that dates back over 900 years. Perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Hunza River, this ancient fort stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and strategic importance along the historic Silk Road. Altit Fort is renowned as one of the oldest surviving forts in the region, with its origins tracing back to the 11th century when it was constructed by the Baltit people, ancestors of the present-day Hunza community. Over the centuries, Altit Fort has served as a stronghold for various rulers and clans, witnessing the ebb and flow of history in the region. Today, it stands as a well-preserved heritage site, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural prowess and lifestyle of the ancient Baltit civilization. With its stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains, Altit Fort remains a popular attraction for tourists and history enthusiasts alike, prov

We had seen Shigar and Khaplu Forts but this one was much much older, 1000+ years old with an amazing history.

The guide was very thorough and told the story of the two brothers very well.

The only advise I have for visitors is to come as early as possible, preferably 9ish in the morning, the place gets really busy as the day progresses. Also, if you are visiting, please be respectful to others by turning your cell phones on silent and not bringing in smaller children who may cause disturbance to others listening to the story.

I also would not advise elder people who have mobility challenges to go inside the fort.

Overall, a good experience

One should be a history enthusiast if he/she wants make full of his/her visit to this absolute marvel.

Built over 1,100 years ago, this piece of art - the Altit Fort - is fused into the natural form and color of the surrounding landscape. It is beautifully preserved, clean, and accessible. Its wooden pillars as well as the ancient wallnut-wood furniture bear artwork from the Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim reigns of the past.

Just beneath it, there's a village that's as old as the Fort but it is inhabited by locals and yet preserved in its original form. Thanks to the Agha Khan Foundation that did it in collaboration with the Govt. of Norway.

Don't miss the 'Standing Grave' in the main guard's chamber which, according to a local guide, belongs to the brother of a ruler who was punished for his attempt to overthrow a government.

Serena Hotel is located in the lawns of the Altit Fort.

Beautiful ancient place, as if you are in the movie scene. The fort guide is soooo hilarious 😂, entertaining us too well. A great photographer too. Really admired how they maintain it well, despite has passed for centuries!

Cool fort with interesting history (get a tour guide if possible!) Free entry included if you're staying at the Serena Altit Fort hotel. The views are even better from the top of the fort, as you can see more of the river. Would recommend!
