- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom3,654 contributionsSpectacular viewsWe walked up to the castle from our accommodation in Gorica although it is possible to drive up, there is parking just outside the main gate. Free to enter, the castle is still a working village so there are restaurants and shops in the vicinity. Would recommend taking a map from the tourist information centre to help navigate. There is limited information on the main building highlights and apart from the Onufri museum, none of the other churches were open. The main attraction is the spectacular views across the valley. We enjoyed a very nice lunch at Mbrica traditional restaurant. With lunch and a museum visit we spent about three hours up there.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023
- gniteIreneToronto, Canada943 contributionsA living castleWe stayed one night in a guesthouse inside Berat Castle. It was very refreshing to see locals living there, going about their business and socializing. We took a taxi from the Berat bus station and were dropped off just inside the gate. We had difficulty finding our guesthouse and locals were quick to help us. It was a bit challenging pulling our carry on luggage over the uneven, cobblestone and up the hills, but that was a small price to pay for the privilege of staying inside the castle. Even if one doesn't stay in the castle, it is a wonder to walk around and explore , and the panoramic view from the lookout is unparalleled. There are a few restaurants and souvenir shops around the castle but the real joy comes from exploring and taking in the view of beautiful Berat down beow.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 June 2024
- Jake TOntario, Canada27 contributionsGreat view, hard hikeBeautiful view, tough hike! My first recommendation is that you take on the hike from the east side. The road rises about halfway up the mountain and then the steep climb begins on foot. The path is rugged but manageable. The castle, church and prison are small but very worth a visit. There is a wonderful view of all of Berat. Expect several vendors in the area.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024

We visited the Berat Castle in October. The entrance fee was 300 All but comparing to the rest of attractions in Albania, It is not worth the money. Once you pay your ticket, you don't get any directions or anything isn't open inside the Castle. It gives you the idea of a local market where people try to sell you stuff, more than the impression of an historical place. It is supposed to have the museum and a couple of churches which all of them were closed. To go to toilet you need to sit in a bar and buy a drink than you can use their restroom. Not clear why you need to pay since its absolutely nothing opened or doesnt fulfill the minimum requirements to be called a city attraction. Disappointed by it.

We really enjoyed walking round the castle which, surprisingly, is free to enter. The panoramic view from the lookout spot is amazing with a vista covering the whole valley. The Onufri Museum also has some interesting icons, paintings, artifacts and frescoes, although there is a nominal entrance charge there. Finally, there are several cafés, restaurants etc to refresh in a hot day.
One tip - it is a pretty steep walk up to the castle entrance, but a cab from town is only 500 Lek (just over US $4, so if you’re not in tip top shape it’s an inexpensive alternative. Coming down the hill is obviously much easier.

We had a day off business so we visited this amazing place. We took the bus from the new Tirana Terminal, it cost 500 Lek/way. A taxi took us up for another 500 Lek. The castle is great, big, interesting, and the views are amazing. Be prepared for dangerous places, do not let kids run about alone. The castle is definitely worth a visit. It is free now, but it seems they charge tourists in summer. Cafés are also closed, you must walk down to the city to eat/drink.

Located on a hill above the "Berat" City which is very popular in Albania. From the capital Tirana takes about 2 hours. The location is very wide, but there are many interesting photo spots. Inside the castle you can find souvenir sellers and food stalls. Don't forget to visit Berat if you are in Albania.

Climbing up was not easy! However, it was very rewarding. Beautiful old houses, churches, some well restored, others waiting for a “lifting”. Walking through an inhabited castle was magic. Instead of a sign to stop us from entering a dead end, a little girl standing at her window, waved NO, and we knew to turn around and look for a different path to observe the river and city views.

Originally a 13th century old byzantine castle built over the walls and other roman fortifications from the 5th century with many churches and other monuments inside as well as some ottoman monuments from later times as well as many little houses yhat still exist. You can enjoy the stroll in its tiny alleys as well as the views overlooking the beautiful city of Berat and the river Osum. There are also the ruins of an ottoman mosque and its minaret.

At the time of writing the Castle is free to enter.
It’s a long hard walk up the steep hill on a hot day but worth it. Welcomed by massive Castle gateways you have plenty to walk around.
Like Carcassonne in France people live inside the castle and there are hotels, restaurants and tourist shops.
Lots of interesting buildings remain and some fantastic views.
Well worth a visit.

Hey , i am wondering the easiest and most affordable way to travel from split, croctia to Berat, Albania and if it is safe to do myself as a female? Thanks in advance

Albania is perfectly safe; perhaps one of the safest places in all of Europe. It has so many wonders--natural and ancient man-made marvels. You can travel by car between Macedonia and Albania. Be wary of driving in Albania, though. The signage isn't always visible. You can also travel bus between Macedonia and Albania. Buses do not always follow their schedules in Albania.

Hi 156Tony,
Pleased to visit your fine castle and to offer my congratulations and some possible recommendations for the future. It is certainly important to find the funds, government support and private helpers to both maintain and upgrade this excellent piece of Albanian history. Good luck!
