Aldo Leopold worked hard to establish the Gila Wilderness as the first one in the US. The views, especially to the north, are expansive, and of course, a pit stop is always welcome on a long drive.

On our way to Glenwood, NM we stopped at the Aldo Leopold Vista for a look-see. Stunning views, informative signage about the history of Leopold and surrounding area. Very hot in summer, shaded picnic tables but no shade from trees as this is high desert.

This rest stop has covered picnic tables. The views are very nice. The restrooms however are usually not very clean at all.

This picnic area rest stop is a great place to pause and learn about the Gila National Wilderness (first designated wilderness).
