The history at this site is stupendous. There is a cemetery, the well house and several placards to explain the fort. Unfortunately the walls of the fort are deteriorating. Four wheel drive is a must.

We really enjoyed this piece of history. Once you turn onto county road A020 you go one mile to the turn off road. The road is just the other side of the cattle guard, and the site is between 4 and 5 miles from the...More

We learned so much history from just one visit. There is so more that I now want to research about the area. It is a shame that what is left is in a extreme level of deterioration,

To enjoy the remains of the fort ,you really must be a history buff. In the last 12 year since we first visited it, the adobe ha deteriorated to very little left. Years ago this should have been declared a national monument, but I guess...More

Went here the first time with a local historian which lent a lot to the visit. It can be hard to find because the turn-off is almost immediately left after you turn onto Cooke's Peak road and is unmarked. Worth the drive though. In the...More

Hands down one of the most historic sites that I have visited with a combination of authenticity, atmosphere and actual ruins. Here was an Indian Wars fort, a historic cemetery, a Butterfield Stage Station and Cooke's Canyon where perhaps 400 people lost their lives and...More

I conducted archaeological excavation here in the late 1980s, so this place always holds dear to me. The history of this place is real, unlike so many roadside attractions.

Fort Cummings was used at two different periods to protect travelers from Indian attacks. The other review has the directions how to get there. There is no signage until you get to the ruins. I was on a dual purpose motorcycle so the roads are...More

A very historic area. Quite a bit of the ruins are still visible and the spring house is in excellent condition yet! Very interesting place to see!

I guess the roads have changed a little since the last review. From the village of Nutt, where NM27 and NM26 split off, travel approximately 14 miles SW on NM26. Turn NW on Luna County road 19, which is labeled Cooks Canyon Road. There are...More
