The northern end has more interest it terms of sights. if you do not arrive or depart via this route then I would recommend. I was told however that the route does get busy near Christmas.

The drive goes through high desert, mountains, forests, lakes and rivers, each area uniquely beautiful. Red River is a fun town for shopping and for area outdoor adventures. Has a great brewery. We try to also stop at Comanche Creek Brewery along the way! A...More

My husband and I enjoyed this drive immensely as the scenery was beautiful and varied and despite being peak tourist season there was little traffic. Red River, at about the halfway point has a lot of restaurants and activities if you need to pit stop.

The only real climb and descent is from Taos to Eagle Nest. There are not "sheer" drop-offs but you go up and over; there are guard rails, particularly on the Eagle Nest side where you drive down a heavily forested road. Not... More
