I'm lucky to live within 40 minutes of the Bear Mountain park. We often do day hikes, most frequently going up the Major Welch Trail and coming down the Appalachian Trail. I recently did this route with my 11 year old son who loved it....More

Beautiful views from the top of the mountain. Can drive there but go early as parking is limited there. Down at the base, a very poor zoo but views of the Hudson are magnificent from within the zoo. Merry go round, vast expance of open...More

This is a nice gem of a park for walking along trails and climbing on boulders. The Appalachian Trail goes right this park, and there is a nice viewpoint from The Tower. Lots of shade. Unfortunately, lots of trash too.

Went to the Zoo first, not impressed with all the uphill walking, it is rough on older people. Had lunch and enjoyed the scenery which is just beautiful. We had a very energetic 7 yr old with us. So we visited the Merry Go Round,...More

The mountain is gorgeous. There is a lake with a circular paved walking trail around it that is mostly level. Good hiking trails of various sorts and great scenery. A nice small zoo with museum items as well. Can climb down to the Hudson River,...More

Beautiful park with great hiking. Hessian Lake is lovely for a walk or picnic, but the park is very crowded on weekends with barbecues and gatherings. Tough to enjoy when so crowded.

First off, if you plan to hike, the trail maps can be hard to decipher. If you want a scenic, moutainous hike, you definitely want to take the WHITE APPALACHIAN TRAIL! We first tried the 1777/Doodletown trail and were very unimpressed by the view, ease...More

We had time before checking into the room and visited the zoo. It is quite a nice walk with little museums tucked into the park.

Room to roam thru the woods; up to mountain tops, down to lakes. Great views and hikes that are from easy to extremely difficult. Many well marked trails throughout the park. Were services are - swimming, Bear Mountain Inn, Zoo, all are friendly and fun.

No I don't think so, I believe you can only use carcoal grills. They have them spread out throughout the picnic area. Hope it helps!
