I had heard about this place so while staying in Lyon I decided to take the 30 minute train from Gare Lyon Perrache to Gare de Vienne. It is about an easy 15 minute walk from the train station to the museum. Overall it is wonderful Museum but everything is in French except an audio guide in English. By the way, I had just been in Turkey earlier in the year so I was not as impressed. But it is a great place if you had not seen a whole town that is filled with ancient Roman ruins. It is nice the town built around the the site so we all can still enjoys it.

This museum has many excellent items. The mosaics may be the highlight. Thee is also a great outdoor site to visit. (Trip advisor, please correct spelling to Gallo-Roman or search engines will miss this listing)

The exhibition brought to life the Roman period in the Vienne area. We started inside and might have stayed there given the fierce heat outside. But, one of us, being slightly intrepid, risked the heat to walk around the preserved site. Outside, in a way, was less good than inside as the information provided was skimpy and more audio guide points would have been helpful. Also , it was not clear outside which areas had been renovated (if any) and which were seen as found.

This museum/archaeological site in the small town of Vienne wqs surprising in terms of the quantity and especially the quality of artifacts that were on display. Especially notable was the variety of mosaics and frescoes and their level of preservation. The museum presented many artifacts, models and reconstructions that could easily occupy more than an hour of time. But in addition, outside the museum was an archaeological site that uncovered the foundations, streets and gardens associated with many of the homes and commercial sites in this early neighborhood. Along with the Roman amphitheater and temple dedicated to Augustus and Livia, the museum and archaeological site make Vienne a great place to visit.
