Long Island beach in Queens borough that can be reached by subway. Popular destination for New Yorkers in mid-20th century, still pleasant to visit.

First time at this beach but we had so much fun. The waves are huge at this beach. I disliked all the seagulls hovering around watching us eat. Very nice and quiet crowd in the area where we were located. I will visit again in the future.

Nice beach within city limits, easier trip than the Long Island beaches & no entry fee. Parking can be challenging on summer weekends, so get an early start or continue further to jacob Riis park if you can't find a spot. Stay near the buildings if you want to access food or restrooms

My understanding it's being revitalized since hurricane Sandy. Too bad the projects are in view. Project mentality keeps it dirty. It could be a gem, but surely the city isn't going to put money in keeping it clean.

We visited here on the 23rd August to escape the city for a while. Just a word of warning if you are getting the subway down to the beach, you will need the A train and will need to change at Rockaway Boulevard and take the S train. We hadn't realised there were two different A trains so ended up... More

As long-time Ramones fans we made the journey from Manhattan on the blue train to Rockaway and it was really easy – express train; change for the shuttle, drops you a block from the beach. There are a couple of nice bars and miles and miles of sand.

My daughter lives in Brooklyn and I was always seeing pictures of her Rockaway Beach. While I was visiting, we took the trains to the beach. It is just a cool, low key. Family oriented beach. I'm used to packing the car or having all my "necessities" but when you are taking several trains and a shuttle, you pack lightly.... More

I have lived in Manhattan for over 30 years and never been to the Rockaways. Since hurricane sandy hit back in 2011 and wiped the place out I have heard a lot of good talk about the cool things happening here and finally had a chance to check it out. You can take the A train and it's almost 1.75... More

Sandy was a disaster to this area to be sure................but Rockaway has rebuilt itself (albeit years of an effort) and is more beautiful than ever. The concession stands offer food for any diet, and their often is live music and boardwalk 'street' fairs.

I hesitated before going as I wasn't sure what it would feel like to be on a beach so close to big housing buildings etc. (Spoilt Mediterranean alert). But as far as beaches within easy drive or transit from the city, it was really great. The sand was nice and wide, the new boardwalk is great, there's food and restrooms... More
