This member-supported unit of Cornell University is a world leader in the study, appreciation, and conservation of birds. The 226-acre Sapsucker Woods Sanctuary contains over 4 miles of public trails, with more than 200 species of birds. The visitor center, open 10am -4pm daily, has an observatory with a 30-foot wall of windows, seating, a fireplace, and spotting scopes. Some... More

Lots of lovely walks, an impressive building stocked with exhibits, and tours galore make this Cornell facility a knockout at all times of the year. Little ones might be less impressed as the main building though quite amazing with soaring glass walls fronting a beautiful pond is more adult than child friendly.

We are pretty interested in birds and as we were passing through Ithaca had the Cornell Lab on our list of things to do. Very interesting building in a lovely setting. The bird murals inside are breath taking. I had expected more displays/more about the lab and or local birdlife, but it seems more of a research library. I also... More

We stopped here for a few hours and are so glad we did. We took the very informative tour and also enjoyed wandering around on our own. Great little side trip if you're in the area!

We went on the behind-the-scenes lab tour (11:30 am Saturdays) led by a knowledgeable senior in the ecology & evolutionary biology program. 'Stops' included the lab's incredible bird family mural, its specimen prep lab, and recent posters presented by Cornell students and faculty. The institute houses all vertebrate biology so we gleaned some interesting 'herp' facts too. Highly recommend!

If you love birdwatching or just enjoy the outdoors, you will have a great time here. We had a really nice hike and saw a number of birds including woodpeckers, herons, blue jays, swallows, and a Baltimore Oriole! I would imagine we would have seen even more if we got there earlier. The actual Ornithology Lab is worth checking out... More

It is probably a fabulous place for birds. I went closer to dark one day and on a less than ideal one as well, and I ran across quite a few birds but they really aren't easy to see. Probably better off getting a nice bird feeder and putting it near a big window for the bird viewing experience. But... More

did not find any this time, but it was great to visit a famous and well known site like this. A lot of parking available; many visitors on this lovely October day. Lovely sitting area (indoors) overlooking a pond with water fowl activity.

We visited for a scheduled docent tour of the Ornithology Lab and found it a) interesting, b) *very* scientifically oriented (thus more interesting to me than to my wife) and c) a bit "talky." The Lab is also a museum with a wealth of fascinating specimens on display. The grounds in which it is situated are a bird sanctuary with... More

Visited on a perfect fall day and enjoyed a long walk through the woods despite getting lost and wandering around. The trail maps were difficult to understand and did not seem oriented to the trail. The woods were also devoid of birds that day. Despite all this we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful, well maintained trails and talking to other lost... More
