I lived on LI for decades and heard many things about Camp Hero and Montauk Project. My adult daughter and I decided to go. Totally surprising how much of this is sill intact; from the Radar Tower to the barracks to the bowling alley. Apart...More

Camp Hero is the part of Montauk where thousands of U.S. Soldiers were encamped after the Spanish American War. After fighting in Cuba, the Philippians, Porto Rico many of the Soldiers became sick with Malaria and Montauk was an ideal place to quarantine them.

Camp Hero State Park is quieter than some of the other Montauk beaches. It has the same ocean waves with a rockier shoreline. It has been featured in The Affair.

We drove there with our bikes, and picnicked with burgers and dogs. The kids rode around and then we took some trails. Had a great time.

This is a must for anyone the loves to take pictures especially night photos. There is no light except for the light house its self.

We enjoyed walking on the trails, which are not long at all, and skipping rocks on the beach, and there a LOT of rocks.

When you drive into camp hero you’ll immediately notice that many of the roadways are in disrepair. The radar tower was cool to see and there are multiple picnic areas.

Camp Hero is a family favorite for us. We love telling the kids the history of it and hiking the different trails. It is a little creepy but in a fun way. There are tons of picnic areas and photo opportunities.
