Encompassing more than 600 acres, the Genesee Country Village & Museum...

Encompassing more than 600 acres, the Genesee Country Village & Museum is one of the largest living history museums in the country. Located in small hamlet of Mumford, New York, about 20 miles (32 km) from Rochester, New York, USA. First opened to the public in 1976, the authentic 19th-century Historic Village features costumed historians breathing life into many of the 68 relocated and restored historic homes, farms, shops and other public buildings. When you visit during the regular season you will find various historic trades and craftspeople as well as historic cooking and agricultural demonstrations. GCV&M is also home to the John L. Wehle Art Gallery, the Genesee Country Nature Center, Silver Baseball Park, and several Heirloom Gardens. Numerous special events and classes are also offered throughout the year. Our regular open season runs from Mother's Day weekend through Columbus Day, with special programs in November, December and March.

Fortunately the large village is far from the sounds of the freeway, making it easy to imagine neighborhoods before cars: peaceful. Buildings are well organized into periods. Delightful to walk through actual homes and stores. Don't miss Edison's home or the octagon house with the ventilation system. Re-enactors shared their knowledge. The pioneer lady told us about lye, butchering the... More

Went for the Spirits of the Past this year. I have wanted to do this before and never got the chance. You may want to grab a bite to eat before attending as the food was pricey. Not a place for anyone with a disability. It was pouring rain, the pathways were DARK and slippery. Our tour guide was friendly... More

I always love to visit living history places. I had heard about this spot. Since I was going to be nearby, I made a visit, and I was glad that I did. It is a big place with lots to see. The downside is they are not open all year round. If you are in the region, it is a... More

If you are in to history you will enjoy this place. There are a ton of old homes & buildings that were disassembled and moved, in some cases quite a distance to this location. There is everything from a small sod / log cabin all the way to a HUGE victorian style home. This is located between Buffalo and Rochester... More

My son and his fiancee took us to visit the venue where they will be married in the spring. It was quite a wonderful experience visiting all the little shops and learning the history of each as well as the interaction with a very impressive and knowledgeable staff. A must visit when in the area. Really liked the pottery, gunsmith... More

This was my third visit today.. and my husband and 6 year old son first. We all really enjoyed visiting the buildings and interacting with staff. My son was a bit bored but he did enjoy making his own ornament and the kids shop in one of the museum buildings. Enjoyed the shopping and would have eaten there if a... More

There is so much to learn and experience when visiting this place. First, if you enjoy history and old architecture at all plan on getting there at opening and spend the whole day there. Even then you can not do everything. Even though I have been to many other historical type attractions I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned things that... More

I recommend that you plan a full day for your visit. Take a picnic lunch, as well as a blanket to sit on the grass. Also look at the paper they give at the entry showing what demonstrations are going on, and where for that day. Have good walking shoes because this is a large property. I wish we had... More

While camping at Genesee Country Campground, we went to visit the museum. The place hasn't changed except the gallery. The artifacts were just amazing from years and years ago. Great weather to walk around the grounds

We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your time with us during the Hop Harvest Festival. We are also happy to hear your thoughts regarding the food and ale being served in the historic village. We try hard to provide our guests with a quality experience all around. Sauerkraut demos are given each year during the German Festival but... More
