- lindylou84Harlow, United Kingdom162 contributionsWell worth a visitBrilliant experience though it’s a bit of a walk to the lake. Having said that, a random driver took the less mobile, in our group, to the cafe near the bottom. We left the salt on our skin until we got back to the hotel. There’s a shower at the lake that costs €1. It does your skin wonders.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 October 2023
- Stuart ARamsgate, United Kingdom399 contributionsSalty!Salt farms and lakes, set in the crater of an extinct volcano. Park at the top and walk down through a hand-carved tunnel. Long steep walk, possibility you can drive there if you have mobility issues. €5 entry per person. Showers available, €1 for a short blast to get the water off. Very warm water in the pools, which was nice, not as salty as the Dead Sea, but just as floaty. A very interesting experience.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 November 2023
- PavijeLittle Cumbrae, United Kingdom845 contributionsGreat ExperienceVisited as part of a tour. Water very refreshing. Changing facilities at base. Not overcrowded at all. December is a great time to visit. The old remains of the salt transportation system is still in place. If you are in Cape Vede I would defo make the tripVisited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 December 2023
- yinyin zSpeyer, Germany36 contributionsCool experienceFloating in the water is so wonderfully bizarre! Great experience! One point minus because when we finished, some large groups arrived so I could imagine that the fun would be much less when the timing would be bad. So be there early.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2023
- Chris_KOKoblenz, Germany3,579 contributionsFloating around in a volcanoThe entire complex is located inside a huge volcano crater. This was previously used to mine and export salt. After commercial salt mining ended on the island, the tourism potential was discovered. Today you can swim in a lake with an extremely high salt content and let yourself drift like in the Dead Sea. Entry costs six euros. Changing rooms, showers, toilets and a coffee shop are available.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 March 2024

Pedra Lume is quite a hike (drive by car) from any of the main resorts on Sal. Although interesting from a historical perspective it is not worth the effort. The site is not well maintained. The dressing rooms were very dirty. The showers did not work. There was a communal outdoor cold water shower for a cost of 1 euro/minute which hardly did the trick of removing the salt and mud. I would avoid this at all cost. Not 100% sure, but may have been the cause of a bout of D/A as well.

Visited while on a tour of the Island. Great experience floating in the Salt Lake. Very relaxing, would advise to bring some water shoes as lake floor is very rough underfoot. Five euro entry and bizarrely extra charge to use shower facilities. Best visited on island tour as 90 minutes here is probably long enough for most.

One of the seven wonders of Cabot Verde.
For €5 each you can enter the historic salt mine and float in the crater which is several metres below sea level. The increased buoyancy of the dense, super saturated solution is a curious experience. Don’t get it in your eyes. Rinsing afterwards is optional. A shower cost 1€ for 30 seconds.
There is a bar, basic changing facilities and a WC. We visited as part of a bargain 25€ pp whole day (0900-1800) island tour with Jose Sousa of Sodade tours (more details in another review).

We easily negotiated a E30 taxi tour from SAL Airport to include a stop at this 2016 Tentative UNESCO site as part of our transfer to our Santa Maria apartment.
Our non-English speaking driver drove 8km NW on a good paved highway to a pretty 1853 church, to take a nicely cobbled lane for 1 km to park in a lot among tour vans, buses and other taxis. After paying E5 each, a 100m walk through a tunnel exposed the deep bowl of salt pans which is the crater of an extinct volcano. A gentle cobblestone path winds down to the cafe, restrooms and adjoining changing rooms. A 300m dirt lane passes the mine equipment shed on the way to the waterside wooden benches and access points to float/swim just like in the famous Dead Sea in Israel-Jordan. It was a slow climb out of the crater and back through the tunnel to return to the parking lot. We were happy with the car’s AC on the 25km drive S, completing our transfer to our apartment near the Santa Maria Beach.

This is a great experience
Swim in the salt lake you will float as you can't sink
5euros each if you make your own way
We hired a quad for the day with Edgar on the beach out side our Riu hotel used him for all our experiences cost much less than holiday reps.
The salt lakes There is a cafe for drinks and a toilet.
About 500 yards from the car park down a paved walkway it's on a fairly steep slope down, most people wouldent find it a problem to the saltlake and return I can't remember any steps
You will need water, a towel, beach shoes if you have them
A few euros as the showers cost 1euro each.
Super experience you should try it, it's just like the dead sea

This is a salt lake with 26.5 % salt in the water (normal sea water has 3.5 % salt). The result is when you swim in the water it’s almost impossible to sink. It is a very funny experience, and we were laughing all the time. The location of the lake is in the middle of a big volcanic crater.

Instant impact when you go through a man made stone tunnel from the 1700,s which opens out into a massive inner area of a volcano, now extinct. You walk down a stone/ cobble path towards the salt lake way below. To one side are the remains of old timber mining cable car structures, that used to elevate the salt all the way up and down the valley to the sea beyond. Immersing yourself in the salt lake, which apparently has healing properties, is a weird experience as you float and struggle to lift yourself up right. As you go further into the salt water the base below your feet actually warms up, very odd. Overall a natural experience not to be missed.

There is not a tremendous many things to see on Sal Island so you might as well see this place . Portuguese started mining the salt flats in the 1600s and did so until the 1950s . You walk through a small tunnel into the crater where you float in the super salty lake if you wish. Also a small bar, gift shop, and a place to shower available. 5 euros .

We visited here as part of an Island tour and we were really pleased we joined in. The changing facilities are basic and you can take a post dip shower for one euro ( we didn’t so cannot comment). The decent into the crater is rocky but the water is clear so you can see where you are treading. What is amazing is how dense the water is and how little you can control your movements when trying to swim or move around. It was great fun

Since there isn't really much to see on Sal, this was our only excursion destination from Santa Maria in the 3 days. It takes 20 minutes by taxi, for a negotiated 40€ return trip (the driver originally wanted 50€).
It was a cool experience to swim in this salt lake, so the trip and the 5€ entrance fee are worth it.
IMPORTANT: Get there early, by 10.30am at the latest, then you'll be almost alone and that's much nicer than with the crowds of people that arrive in buses from 11am.

Hej når man besøger saltbassinerne og går ned til den lille havn - hvad hedder havnen? kan man køre dertil i stedet for at gå? tager der en time at gå?

Is there a mud treatment here that is included in the entrance price?
Written 12 December 2018
Yes, in addition to floating in the salt water, there is an area to the right where there is mud. You can slather it all over yourself and let it dry. We had a group and took some fun pictures with mud on our faces like war paint, on the scalps of the two bald guys too! Then get back in the water and wipe it off. Mud helps pull out stuff so your skin will be softer afterwards. Fun!

Estarei no hotel Riu Garopa.
Quanto custa o transporte?
e a entrada para a salina ?
e a massagem ?
Written 18 September 2015
