About
The Santorini Cable Car is the fastest and most convenient way to get to and from the Old Port of Gialos to Fira. It's a quick four-minute ride, so it is really popular and gets quite busy, especially during summer and when cruise ships pull up to the port—book your tickets in advance if you don't want to get stuck in long lines. There's a fee to bring your luggage as well. For spellbinding views of the Aegean Sea and the caldera, grab a seat that faces the turquoise waters. – Tripadvisor

- Mairwen1United Kingdom11,643 contributionsAvoid the the Busy Cruise Ship Comings & Goings If You CanThe cable car is both a scenic and a practical ride, linking Santorini harbour with the hilltop town of Fira. The views over the old port and across the caldera are of course amazing and because the cliffside is almost vertical but because it’s so steep, the cable car isn’t scarily high off the ground. The ride itself is very quick (just a few minutes) but expect to wait some time in the queue. The real log-jam happens when the cruise ship passengers are trying to get to/from Fira en masse. If you can avoid their comings and goings, then it is a lot easier. The only times I saw it without a queue were early in the morning and later at night but during the rest of the day, I never walked past without seeing a crowd. One time, it had broken down altogether, causing quite a bit of chaos. Cost is €6 one way (€3 for kids). The other options are a bus, taxi, a donkey ride or you can take a deep breath and tackle the 588 stairs that wind their way up the side of the volcanic precipice.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- StacyMacDonaldCalgary, Canada233 contributionsCaution: QueuesWe took a tour that departed from the Old Port, which the only way to get to is by cable car or stairs (which you can use a donkey on). There are reviews here that identify "take a taxi" or "take a bus" and this is not possible for Old Port (only New Port/Athinios, where ferries depart from). Our tour left at 11:00 and recommended getting to Old Port at least 30 minutes ahead, so we hit the cable car going down at around 10:00/10:15 in the morning. There was a short line, and we were on the car within 10 minutes. Coming back at around 2:30 was a little different. We were in a line for about 20 minutes before lining up for the car. Cruises come into Old Port, making the cable car situation very busy. While it's only a three minute ride, there are only six cable cars that hold a max of six people each, so up to 36 people can move every five or so minutes. We saw lines that wrapped through almost all of Fira around 6/7 p.m. one night. Someone said the wait would be up to 3 hours. This was possibly abnormal--there were four cruise ships in port, and we saw shop owners taking videos. There's a suggestion in the review saying just take a speed boat to Oia and, I'm not a cruiser, but highly suggest avoiding this cable car if you can if you're on a cruise. Or be prepared to walk up and down 600 stairs.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- AlexTheJockWigston, United Kingdom3,415 contributionsLong wait times, but better than walking up or down the donkey trackSix long-time friends came ashore from a cruise ship really early in the morning, and even so we were still greeted with a long queue for the cable car. We considered walking up the donkey track, or paying for a donkey ride up into the town, but in the end, as it was a beautiful day we decided to wait in line for the car. One thing that did annoy us, and a lot of other people queuing, was the amount of queue jumpers who were pushing into the queue, mainly as it was going into the building. Unbelievably other people were letting them in without saying a word. Anyway it took around half an hour before we got to the front and paid the €6 per person for the single trip – you can’t pay for a return. The trip on the cable car is superb, with spectacular scenery as you go up. Unfortunately we decided to walk down the donkey track on the way back, and this was a crass decision as it is hard going, even though you are going downhill (we spoke to other people from the ship that had walked up it in the morning and they told us it was an absolute nightmare of a climb up to the town). The track is full of donkey muck, is quite slippery and the donkeys seem to head straight for you on their way up and down to the town. On reflection we would have been better to have taken the cable car back down to the harbour.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 October 2023
- beth ann kHalstead, Kansas1,862 contributionsCool ridePretty cool ride and it's definitely better than walking up those donkey steps. We only rode it down, as our cruise ship left us off at another harbor, but as we got on, several people that we didn't know, got in the car with us. Seemed a little odd, as there wasn't a line to go down.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 November 2023
- Scottish-Hidden-Gems🏴💎Ayrshire, United Kingdom9,420 contributionsExpect long ques!We waited 2 hours in a que to get up in the cable car on a hot day as there were 5 cruise ships docked at 1 time. It costs 6 euros each way per person and they have toilets available. Personally, I don't like heights, but it only lasted a few minutes, so it was not too stressful, but it was easier than climbing the steps. The que to get down was even worse, so be warned to expect LONG QUES! I would advise anyone to book an excursion as they get priority access. Please don't use the donkeys, Whatever you do, they looked so exhausted!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 November 2023
- sashakeenaVancouver, Canada11,946 contributionsInteresting Ride!🤣🤩We were lucky taking a bus up with our cruise excursion to see Fira & Oia! However once we were ready to head back to our ship the “waiting “ started! Luckily we on had one other ship in Port. Must remember that the cable car only takes a maximum of 36 passengers at any given time going either way! Have to admit that the view was amazing!🤩Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023
- smithelevenFort Worth, Texas3 contributionsThe gondola ride was fine and a nice view but they need to find a way to increase capacity or make an alternative. The gondola ride to the top was fine but the line to get on was about 45 min. Be aware that at the end of the day they will cut off the line when they have as many people as they can handle before they close so you are left with no option but to walk or ride a donkey back down to catch your tender to the cruise ship. Had a negative experience with a cold-hearted nasty donkey handler with no compassion that way overcharged an elderly lady that needed assistance - would never recommend the donkeys just to keep money out of his pocket!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 May 2024
- wanderlust4adventureVancouver, Canada201 contributionsMassively under sized; convenientWe visited Santorini as a stop along a cruise route. If you’re interested in visiting Santorini, do not do so as a visit from a cruise ship. Between 10,000 - 15,000 people across 5 ships arrived at the same time and had to wait hours while the cable car took people, 36 at a time, up the hill. The cable car is a nice trip, but vastly undersized. Departing the island, the wait was more than 2 hours for a cable car back down (and by this time only 2/5 ships remained). We walked instead, which took about 45 minutes, as we had to avoid the slick portions on the stairs from donkey poop.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 May 2024
- Tina Hayes4 contributionsNo lines early down, or midday back up?There was a HUGE line (thousands of people) at 9:45 am to come up - no wait to go down. We came up at 2pm, after a 3 hr cruise, and there was NO line to go up (but loads waiting at the top. The 3 hr boat trip that left at 11am was perfect!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024
- David SMiddlesbrough, United Kingdom2,398 contributionsTIME IT RIGHTThe cable car in Santorini is, probably, the most popular way to get to the popular town area. Alternatives include a boat/coach ride or to go on foot (or even on a donkey) up and down the long and steep stairs (the elevation is severe and the route is perilous). Passengers of the cruise ships are frequent users of the cable car and this leads to periods were queues are enormous (apparently you can wait more than 1 hours at times). The ride itself lasts around three minutes and each carriage typically holds 4 people. Tickets for adults are €6 and for children €3. Tip, When you tender to shore, leave it till later in the day because the queues for the cable car are enormous on the morning. Unless your very fit and healthy don't try walking up the 588 steps, it's an absolute nightmare. Too steep, too slippery, too long, too full of donkey poo, and too threatening of your personal safety by the donkeys themselve.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024

We have given this a bad rating because on 2 occasions to Santorini we have bought round trip tickets from the kiosk at the port and not been able to get the cable car as the wait was well over 1 hour. This is how the tour works:
Tickets are at present €30 each, this includes a fast boat from the terminal at Fira, you get off at Oia and get a minibus to Oia centre where you can enjoy a few hours sightseeing or a nice meal, so far so good. You the return to where the minibus dropped you and board a coach to Fira, this wasn’t the best, the coach was old and dirty and the driver drove too fast swinging us around every corner, we were pleased when another vehicle got in front to slow him down. The buses leave Oia on the hour until 4:00PM I think, once you get to Fira you can do whatever you like but when it is time to get back to your cruise ship most people want to buy a cable car ticket which would be great but on both visits we have not bothered as the queue was well over an hour stood in red hot sunshine. Unfortunately on both occasions we have had to take to the donkey trail which is a relentless winding road of over 500 cobblestone steps to reach the port. This is not a pleasant experience once you get past a certain age and I would not recommend it for anyone who is not fit and healthy as it is slippery in places and at various points you have to squeeze past dozens of donkeys. A much better idea would be to get a return boat from Oia to Fira but for some reason this is not possible. In my opinion it all depends on how many cruise ships are in port and what time they are leaving!

Arrived by tender boat from our cruise ship. The options are either walk, approximately 45 minutes, mule or cable car.
To us it was a no brainer 12€ return per person for the 3 minute trip, as we knew we would be doing a lot of walking around Oia throughout the day.
The cars provide marvellous views of the sea and volcano so get your camera ready.
At the bottom there are a couple of gift shops, a cafe that sells alcohol and a few options for boat tours.
Once at the top you are virtually in the town centre.

Recently we were on a NCL cruise at Santorini. While our tour guide wildly underestimated the time needed to move the long line of customers down from Fira to old port area, the attendants were extremely helpful. My wife has back issues and after the long line she was very painful. The attendants had her sit down for a moment, got her a wheelchair and used the chair lift to get her in the lowest cable car. Just this short amount of time resting her legs and back after the Santorini stairs made an immeasurable difference. She was able to navigate under her own power back to tender and to ship. Thanks so much to the crew for their caring.

I was just there on Sept 26th/ 22 on an NCL ship. Its 6 euros each way now - The Cable Car has insane line ups when there are cruise ships in ports - fights broke out for people going back down faking injuries to get ahead of lineups as it was hot & walked past line ups who were waiting more than an hour + ( we waited 1.5 hrs to get on a car to go down) we were all capable to walk down & should have most people took 40 mins to walk down the stairs but it was super hot out & there is no shade on the walk down & you have to be careful re the poorly abused donkeys going up & down . The Government of Santorini & Greece need to fix this or stop more than 2 cruise ships in port at the same time. All they seem to want is more people & more money in which Santorini is losing its pizazz. I was there 5 years ago & it was not like this. I was so sad that they are letting this island go downhill. Too much garbage on the streets like Cigarette butts & way too many people. Santorini you need to fix this situation.

We used the Santorini Cable Car in Fira whilst returning from a day trip to Santorini to our cruise ship anchored in the harbour there. We had been on an organised coach trip of the island of Santorini and the alternate option to the cable car was the many steps down to the harbour which we did not fancy in the afternoon heat.
The cable car consist of two pairs of six cars, each car holding six persons. Each journey therefore takes up to thirty six people at a time and runs at frequent intervals throughout the day. We joined the back of a long queue overlooking the upper cable car station but this was continually shortening following each departure. The queue takes the traveller into the terminal building and access is controlled onto the cable car platform.
Travelling down the steep cliff in the cable car gave some marvellous panoramic views of he harbours with its azure sea contrasting against the lighter blue of the sky and the other islands in the distance. We also got elevated views of the two cruise ships in the harbour and their attendant tender vessels ferrying passengers to and from the harbour side. If you look to your left you will see the steps leading up the cliff face.
A tip for photographers who have not made the leading car, as the six cars cross the cable support pylons, they drop enough to see above the car(s) immediately ahead of you, enabling a clear shot for a few seconds.

This is not the kind of cable car you take to enjoy breathtaking scenery like you might find in Capri (Italy) or Lauterbrunnen (Switzerland). This is a purpose built cable car to give people an alternative option to what looks like 5,000 steps or a donkey ride up and down. At the bottom is the "old port" which is a small port that some cruise liners send their passengers too in smaller boats. What this results in is huge queues of cruise goers who need to get back to the port or up the hill - from what I could gather a number of them were concerned the wait was too long given their time constraints.
As of May 2024 you can buy your ticket at the counter when getting to the front of the queue. It is 6euro per person ONE WAY. They do not sell return tickets so effectively it's 12 euro per person for a return (I think children receive a discount).
Knowing that alot of cruise goers aren't likely to be climbing the millions of stairs it seems a bit of a nicely placed money maker for whoever runs it.
If you don't need to go to the old port for the purposes of catching a boat then I'd give it a miss, avoid the cable car, save your money and go somewhere more exciting.

As most of Greece, the infrastructure for receiving tourists in Santorini is very poor.
Our experience of the cable car was terrible. It’s a rip-off (€6 per person, one way) and it’s completely disorganised. We had to queue for an hour, and there was only one cashier available. The cabins take up to six people, but the ticketing is so inefficient that sometimes they only have two or three people going in, which makes everything slower. There’s no option to pre-purchase and no digital tickets.
Santorini is beautiful, but the cable car experience was a nightmare.

The Santorini cable car is very useful and is not just an added attraction, as it connects the port to the city of Thera. For those arriving by ship, this is the best option to climb the cliffs quickly, it takes about 6 minutes, but the queue can be miles long, so make sure you don't get too involved. Another option for climbing is on foot (if you're physically prepared) or by donkey (but I felt sorry for the animals, in the infernal heat, going up with people on their backs). The cabin transports 6 people at a time, it is safe and practical. You pay 6 euros for people, 3 euros for luggage and 3 euros for children. There is always a queue to get on and off the cable car.

First, the wait and cue going up is full of people cutting in line and takes at least 45 minutes at peak times in the morning. It gets better, the wait in the afternoon at peak times is around 2 hours. We skipped the ride down and walked the slippery donkey path that was treacherous. We observed a young women with a broken ankle and many elderly people struggling because the cable car line was too long. Take cable car in morning and late in afternoon to avoid long lines.

You have to stand in the people compressed line for 1-2 hours in the scorching heat. We just did it yesterday as we had a beautiful shore excursion booked with the cruise line and the host provided us with a prepaid ticket. What a terrible experience. There is no control and people push and shove and yell and skip the line. It was a horrible experience and looking bad I would have walked the steps. I understand it takes an hour but if you are capable of doing the steps do it. It was a terrible experience with people fighting and being rude, so not an endorsement of humanity. There was one family with 7 members who thought it was more important for them to skip people in line because they were ‘a family’! We are all families, but theirs apparently was more important. I hate to say it but they do not represent their country well. It did spoil a beautiful excursion. So if you can take the walk do it.

Hello. Im sure you can buy the tickets in advance at a booth which is near where your tender will dock, however, it doesnt give you a time. You will still have to wait in the queue like everyone else. And sometimes that queue can be for over an hour. If you want to take this mode of transport then i would make sure you make your way there in plenty of time. The tenders go back and forward from the dock so there wont be a problem getting back to the ship once at the bottom

We have a trip to Greece in May 2023, and one of the stops on this cruise is Santorini. I believe the cable cars are in Fira not far from the port, but we have only a few hours there and where would like to go is Oia. Is there transportation near the exit to the cable cars to take us to Oia?

You get tendered in almost to the bottom of the cable car. The earlier you get tendered the less the line will be for cable car. Look for transportation on top of cable car to Oai.
