There are two ways to reach this cathedral, the first is a small flight of steps just next to the entrance to the cable car, directly opposite the frozen yoghurt store; the second is further up along the hiking trail where the lookout to the cable car is, at the intersection with entrance to White Ark Villas on your left, make a right turn up the flight of steps and turn right. Admission to the cathedral is free. It has a really beautiful interior, and is definitely worth stopping by to take a look.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 October 2023
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsPicturesque Cathedral in FiraWe enjoyed our stop here and spent about 30 minutes in the area taking pictures and appreciating the church. The cable car to go down to the old port is nearby and there is a panoramic picture point nearby to enjoy the view. The church is open 9 am to 9 pm and we felt it was worth the stop as we walked back from the Fira to Oia trail. The interior of the church is well let and decorated. There are signs in multiple languages to read about the church and its history. The gates are open from 9 am to 9 pm during the day and one of the signs outside the church is available to see just outside the gate too so make sure you walk around to see everything. There are cafes and restaurants nearby that are good for a quick rest as you explore Santorini by foot. However, we found the souvenir shops nearby were some of the most expensive ones we found on the island and you don't have to go far to find better prices in Fira if you're looking for something to take home.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024
- J CSunderland, United Kingdom421 contributionsBeautiful piece of Greek Religious historyWe carried on our tour of Fira and decided to see the Cathedral of St John the Baptist. It is a very small but beautiful both inside and out. There were a few pews in the cathedral and a small area to pay respect with candles. The paintings around were very detailed picturing religious events etc. It is worth taking a look if in the area and interested in this type of thing.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 August 2024

Not an essential visit, but interesting nonetheless, considering that such a small town as Fira boasts two cathedrals, one Roman Catholic and the other Greek Orthodox. It has a striking location with the bell tower visible from a distance, and a simple interior with a painting of Saint Irene, who was venerated by the early Christian inhabitants of the island. It was a contraction of her name and title which led to the island eventually becoming known as “Santorini”.

The Mass is celebrated in between two languages - Italian (translated into English by a deacon) and Greek (on Sundays). The Italian priest is very welcoming and friendly. He enjoyed warning tourists of pickpocketing.
Sorry for being harsh, but the violinist who played there on Sunday should stick to sacred music. I understand the violinist's prima donna temperament, but the church isn't the right place for him/her to show off his/her repertoire (concertos or Paganini's Caprices) before the start of the Mass. Obviously, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen as a postlude was a bit sacrilegious.
Catholics go there for the Eucharist not the music. The music is meant to bring people to prayers not entertainment. Thank you!

Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is located in Fira, in the Catholic district. It worths a visit since it features a unique architecture, vivid colours and, if you combine it with the sky of Santorini, it will give lots of chances for good pictures. Also, the interior of the church is very peaceful and it reflects a very good atmosphere. Certainly recommended for the places one can visit in Santorini

Classic Catholic church without particularly majestic features. it is located in a central and easily accessible spot in the Catholic quarter and has great views of the caldera and the volcano. Has a nice interior and bell tower. it is worth making a stop here to light a candle and admire the Catholic ecclesiastical style as well as the view.

Unlike most Santorini churches, this Catholic cathedral has no blue dome and no white-washed walls. Instead it has a colourful facade, with a peach and sky-blue bell tower and and a white dome.
The bell tower is the architectural highlight and is wonderfully ornate.
Built in 1823, the church was pretty much razed to the ground by the 1956 earthquake. The devastating quake caused the roof to fall in and caused so much damage that it took nearly 20 years for the cathedral to be restored and re-opened.
The cathedral is easy to visit and is in the centre of town, near the main square. It’s also one of the few churches that is reliably open (entry is free).
In contrast to the eye-catching facade, the interior is rather subdued. The inside of the dome is largely undecorated except for a simple cross painted in the middle of the plain, pale blue-grey surface.
Below the dome, are paintings of the Four Evangelists. These saints wrote the accounts of Christ’s life after his death and were the authors of the Gospels. Each one holds a book or a pen. St Mark in red and white robes, sits calmly reading, seemingly unaware of the lion behind his back. Further around, St Luke in green robes sits beside a bull. A black eagle hovers above St John and St Matthew is busy with an angel.
Opposite the cathedral, is the Dominican Monastery, the oldest covent in Greece but the monastery is not open to the public and the small chapel is only sometimes open.

Near one of the extremes of Fira, you will find the Catholic Cathedral of Santorini, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It is not very old, nor huge, but beautifully built and decorated, it will certainly inspire your prayers while in Santorini. The church is attended regularly by the catholic population of the island (nearly 500 members) and masses are celebrated every Sunday at 10AM (from June to September masses are also celebrated on Saturdays and Sundays at 7PM). Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. As it is not exactly at the "crowded" tourist route in Santorini, its peaceful and inviting, allowing moments of reflection and self-communion. Enjoy!

i was really glad when I learned that there was a Catholic in Santorini, a small island as it is.
Since my vacation included a Sunday, it was really a blessing to be able to hear mass in this cathedral. Moreover, i was also asked to read the second reading! It was indeed an unforgettable experience.
The cathedral was small nonetheless, its paintings were done splendidly!

When I was there, I could not find the door to get in. I saw the clock tower but I do not know where the door to the church hall. Any sign that lead me to the door?

The entrance doorway to the Cathedral was in the East Front - the end of the cathedral towards Imerovigli

Does anyone know when mass times would be for St. John the Baptist Cathedral on Santorini? Are the masses in Greek or English?

How close is the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist to the center of Santorini. I will be in the Oceania cruise in May 8 and would love to go. How do I get there? is this close to the gondolas? Please provide me with instructions.

Anyone coming to Santorini on a cruise ship can easily find the Cathedral right along the walks around the town. You either take a cable car, or ride a donkey up or you can walk. When you get up there, just look for the dome and stop by and the check out the views. We were lucky, they were open, but even if not open, the exterior architecture is very nice. Enjoy!

PLEASE, what is the time of Sunday mass of anticipation on Saturday, October 3? Thank you! Heather
Written 31 August 2015
Yes, Fira is the main town on Santorini. There are at least 3 other large towns on Santorini.
As for mass times, I'm wondering that myself. I haven't been able to find any information on St. John the Baptist Cathedral, online...
